WordPress.com and WordPress.org (6 posts)

  • Hi everyone,

I wanted to add some ads on my blog page (from others people), but I couldn’t post any JavaScript code in a widget. Do I need to use WordPress.org?  I’ve downloaded the web program from them and have all the files but now what?  Is there a simpler way to get a plugin that will allow me to do more in WordPress.com.  I’ve heard about bluehost.com, a web hosting site and a few others because WordPress.org basically says to use them if you don’t know what we are doing.  I don’t know if I need that? Perhaps someone can teach me the ropes.

  • @mchillemi Yeah, you won’t be able to do that on WordPress.com. You’ll need to get onto a server like bluehost.com, load WordPress.org onto it, and then you’ll be able to put ads on your blog.

However, it will be a long process, and you will have to pay for the server space, so you’ll want to make sure you have enough advertising revenue to pay for it.

  • Yes, I saw that it is not cheap.  Would I still need to download wordpress.org?  it is useless at this point because I don’t know what I’d use it for at the moment. Thank you so much for your help.

  • @mchillemiI use Dreamhost for hosting (mainly because they are carbon neutral). They, as I’m sure other do to, have a nifty One-Click-Install service. Installing WordPress is a breeze without it, but a sheer joy with it…

If you do not have such a service then the steps to blog independence are:

    • Find hosting (and get a domain name)
    • FTP your WordPress.org files to your domain
    • Run the install and setup your blog
    • Install plugins (SEO, Google Analytics etc.)
    • Start blogging and put up ads…
Now, if you have a blog at WordPress.com they have a paid service to help you transfer.
Else, you need to do an export/import.
All in all.., if you know what your doing moving a blog can be a challenge, if you don’t, well don’t start.., get help.

Writing everything down here is a bit much… :( But the Guided Transfer sounds like a good move…

  • This is awesome info.  thank you. Unfortunately, I don’t know yet how to move a blog and am scared to try for the moment.  I will wait until I grow my business and increase my followers, etc.  I will look into all of these options when i am ready. It will give me time to do more research on what will work for me.

  • great input for you from everyone, I agree with all the above, you are so smart to wait and grow before you plunge but don’t think you have to be perfect to launch…be about 80% ready and then fix it along the way, you will always find more to do to tweak it @mchillemi
