  • What is the best way to back up your wordpress data.

I am using hostgator for my hosting and they provide backup service. It is not automated due to bigger size of my hosting account I have to e-mail them like once a week to do my back.

On sending e-mail to hostgator they normally complete the full back up and store that in my cpanel which I can easily download for my records as well.

I had a detailed chat with hostgator before relying on this as my primary backup and they confirmed that it backs up full wordpress including pictures, comments, posts, theme etc.

Some times you get confuse when you see lots of paid back up plugins.

What are you thoughts? Am I backing up properly?

Thanks for you help in advance.

  • @rshahbaz personally I just log into cPanel and use the backup wizard to do a full backup.

Haven’t tried any of the plugs so I can’t be much help there.

  • @dakotalocal exactly this is what I am doing as well.

Do you think are we backing up correctly and we don’t need any plugin or something ?

my wordpress guru pal uses iTheme’s BackupBuddy as well:http://pluginbuddy.com/purchase/backupbuddy/

  • @rshahbaz There are some plugins out there that will backup your core database. You can do it the manual way as suggested earlier too. But wuth both of those options, remember to back up your theme files if you have custom coding. I use plugins for my small sites and Vaultpress for my main one. Vaultpress is $15 a month to backup files & database, and I think that’s worth it for your main blog or business.

  • I recommend backupbuddy. Even with a yearly subscription it is well worth it. Back up to Ftp,amazon s3 or dropbox easily.

  • Backup buddy is the best; I use it on all my sites and it works great. It was a real lifesaver recently when one client messed things up on their site.

  • I agree Backup Buddy is a great plugin

  • Thank you guys for your help, I really appreciate it.

@kristi-hines If you are doing manual backup properly as we discussed above. Would you still advice to use vaultpress plugin?

  • @rshahbaz If you manually backup your database and files, then you probably don’t need to. My main site is large and needs to be backed up daily which is too much to remember, so I’d rather have someone else take care of it for piece of mind.

  • @kristi-hines Great, point taken and a big relief.

Thank you for your help once again Kristi, you have a great new year  :)

  • @rshahbaz You too Rana!  :)

  • I too go with BackupBuddy – great especially if you have client sites as well.  Echoing  @scottwyden here.

I also like that you can either go in and do a manual backup (for example if you are about to upgrade to a new version of WP) and you can also run scheduled backups of your database, your full site or both.

The DropBox feature in particular has been great for me.

  • Thank you every one for your support and help.

I really appreciate it, it is really helpful.

Wish you all a very happy and prosperous 2012 :)

  • Also love Backup Buddy. I wrote an article on the whole WP backup issue here: http://www.kellyagarrett.com/2012/the-right-way-to-back-up-your-wordpress-site/
