Which WP template Do You Use? (18 posts)

  • Is one WP Template better than another? I though I read somewhere the GENESIS template is favored the best in Google. Is this true?

I just randomly picked a free template from the WP site and now am wondering if it makes sense to upgrade to a bought template?

  • I have heard this about Genesis too. One of my regrets about the template that I chose was that it wasn’t mobile friendly. Now I realize that was something that is important to me. I am thinking of a new theme myself…

  • @lkellandmay I use…

    • Thesis on my main blog at http://kikolani.com/ – this theme is known for being one of the best search optimized themes.
    • Genesis on my husband’s photography site at http://jasonhines.net/ – also known for good search optimization of their framework and child themes.
    • Elegant Themes on my writing portfolio at http://kristihines.com/ – not known for search optimized themes, but you can install a free plugin called Elegant Themes to optimize it for search.
I wrote about the differences between Thesis and Genesis in this post on my blog - http://kikolani.com/thesis-vs-genesis-comparing-premium-wordpress-themes.html - so people could see the differences in price, design, etc.

  • If you are working with the self-hosted wp.org – with activated Jetpack and a few basic security plugins like Akismet, BackupBuddy and Sucuri or BulletProof, then you are at least running with a secure and reliable environment, no matter what template you are using. Wordpress itself is built with a huge number of pre-installed plugins (unlike Drupal or Joomla) so that – in my opinion – the advantage of premium WP templates is more on the design level.

  • Thanks @ecumenix this is reassuring to know. Installing backup plug ins is next on my agenda!

@kristi-hinesThanks for the links to these lovely pages. Right now I am using a free theme offered on WP, so your article on the difference between Thesis and Genesis is a great place to start. Thanks.

@dawnchitwoodrivers Great to know I am not alone in this regard. This is the place to be to update our information about the available themes and how tos for blogging.

  • Great article by Kristi Hines and explained what I didn’t understand myself. All I know is I’m using Genesis now at http://www.writerswin.com and loving every bit of it, which definitely makes me happy to recommend to others!

  • Think I’ll use Genesis for my new film making blog, which I’m in the process of setting up.

  • I’ve been building WordPress sites for many years, and in the end, it comes down to this for me: I got tired of buying poorly built themes with technical problems that ended up not being supported when WordPress upgraded.

So I made up my mind that I was going to go with either Genesis or Thesis because I saw them as reliable, robust, and well designed. I’ve used both, and I finally jumped on Genesis as my platform.

If you are serious about being online, the hassles of free or nearly free themes and their quality (or lack of) and features (or lack of) is going to become a serious issue for you.

I’m sure there are a handful of other companies who do excellent work that are not Genesis or Thesis. I don’t know about them, so I couldn’t choose any of them.

Kristi’s article is excellent! Thanks for writing that, @kristi-hines!

  • @charlene-kingstonthank you Charlene.
this is valuable information. After surfing around I see so many themes I like so much. They look professional and tidy as well as interesting and fun. A good balance.

  • @lkellandmay I moved from tinkering with free themes to using Thesis. I love this framework…
Also, one of the main reasons for picking this is the no BS attitude of Thesis’ author and the active community supporting it… can’t wait for Thesis 2.0.

  • What is the difference between Thesis and Genesis?

  • Is either Thesis or Genesis responsive themes so the site can be resized for mobile websites?

  • I read your post on WP plugins to use, however, I was not able to find which “Jetpack” to choose. There are many. I couldn’t find “backup buddy” at all. Do you have any further descriptions.  Thanks, Denise@ecumenix

  • @lkellandmay

I’ve only just set up my blog and am using the Codium Extend theme.
It’s simple, responsive, mobile ready and best of all, free.

In regards to SEO, Yoast is one of the better plugins IMO.

  • @camwilkes I will make it a point to check those options out. Thanks!

  • I’ve used several but have never purchased a premium version.  I keep coming back to TwentyEleven as it is customizable but also clean and simple.

  • Yes 2011 is a good looking blog. AND the price is right.

  • I personally love Genesis and now would not use any other framework. I also love the idea of a wide variety of child themes.
