which widget? (7 posts)

  • Not only is that fun to say (try it 3x’s fast) but it also is a serious question. I am helping my daughter (13) set up a wordpress blog site to post her (really, really cool) photos-one for everyday of 2012 and I found a plethora of widgets to choose from. There are the basics like email subscription,  facebook like, search box, previous posts. but really of all the choices what is really necessary? I did discover the widget for del.icio.us which @kristi-hines has mentioned on one of the forums that I will now go check out.

  • @deairby I always suggest that you don’t go too crazy with Widgets outside of the ones built into WordPress.  If they are pulling from other websites (like a widget that pulls in your tweets), you run the risk of your site slowing down if Twitter is running slowly.

  • @kristi-hines thanks, Kristi – ones like del.icio.us? Or is that sending people somewhere else. Do you find out if it is collecting or sending by visiting each widget? I can see how loading from other sites slows things down. By ones built into are you talking about the ones that are already part of the theme you choose?

  • @deairby

Great advise from @kristi-hines I totally understand how easy and fun widgets and plugins may appeal when setting up your site.

The more plugins and widgets you install, the greater the chance of slowing down your site. (depending on what you install) You may also run into problems with plugins conflicting with other plugins, etc.

Best advise, only install what you absolutely need.

  • @leifmartinez minimize…great, now that’s the question: which widgets are absolutely needed? and what’s the difference between a widget and a pluggin?

  • @deairby Without sounding like I’m avoiding your question. It really depends on your goals and what you are trying to accomplish.

Perhaps you can ask the community how to do _______. (Provide a link to the website you like) and reference what you are would like to replicate.

Just an idea. Hope it helps!

  • thanks for your comments, Leif @leifmartinez we are getting there! using only the minimal.
