Which is the best plugin/app that you suggest for screen shots (25 posts)

  • Screenshots are required most of the time for my blog posts. i have played with few of them. right now i am using awesome screenshot app which is okay. However i would like to know ur favorite app which you would like to recommend. Over to you guys :)

  • @prasantnaidu Two I have been using and really like are:
    pixlr grabber and snagit

  • Thanks  @debbie-hemley have tried snagit but need to have a look at the pixir one. One of the other things which i have noticed that the screenshots displayed in SME are so cool. Any idea how is it done :)

  • You’re welcome, @prasantnaidu  You might want to check with @cindy-king re: SME’s screenshots.

  • If you’re on Windows 7, they have the Snipping Tool that is built into it.  I’ve also done screen captures with Word directly.

  • Hi @prasantnaidu it’s cool to see you here! I usually use Snagit to take screenshots, but I’ve used other tools.

What is it that you like about the screenshots?

Some of the authors use some of the editing tools for their screenshots.  I tend to not add anything on them unless it’s very relevant: like an arrow or something like that.

And we almost always add a caption and do that in the WordPress dashboard so it creates the frame around the picture.

  •  Hello @prasantnaidu,

I am with both @debbie-hemley and @cindy-king — as I use Snagit. I also am a Chrome browser user and found an awesome chrome app called “Awesome Screenshot” by Diigo (http://awesomescreenshot.com/) that I use right from my browser bar! That has come in handy :)

  • @prasantnaidu

You might want to consider Jing, it isn’t limited to taking just browser screen shots.

  • I love Snagit. I have bought a lot of software in my life and i feel that it is the best value for money of anything. You can take screen shots but that is just the start. You can then edit them, add speech bubbles, borders, effects, change colors… It’s like having a lot of Photoshop’s functionality at a tiny fraction of the price. And it is so much easier to open, use and be done already. Another thing to be aware of is that every time a jpg is saved, it degrades slightly which leads to pixellation and color blur that you see on some images. Photoshop does the best job of minimizing this but Snagit comes close to their standard. I do web design and I usually use Snagit to quickly mock everything up because it is so much faster than Photoshop. Then when i know what I want it to look like, I go back and create the final version from scratch so that it does not have the pixellation.

  • @prasantnaidu I second @juleswebb recommendation of Jing.  I use the free version, and it does a great job. You can capture any portion of your screen and even add arrows, commentary to the image.  I used it for the images in my post on optimizing social profiles for SEO (http://sem-group.net/search-engine-optimization-blog/seo/how-to-optimize-7-popular-social-media-profiles-for-seo/) and readers seemed to enjoy it!

  • @kristi-hines & @juleswebb,

I’ve used Jing for screen capture video, but not screenshots.  So, nice to learn a new trick today.

    Thank you both! :)

  • I’ve been using Jing too.  If I need a little extra than it is off to PhotoShop but looking at the features of Snagit, it does seem compelling.

One thing that I also like about Jing is the ability to create easy screen recording videos.  Premium version goes for something like $15/year and they include a few extras.

  • Hi  @cindy-king this is a great place to be :) I have used snagit thanks for the suggestion.I use it for the minimum work like all other bloggers but my problem is that when i am taking screen shots the size differs. Any way of controlling it so the post looks decent with proportionate images ?

  • thanks @kimberlylosavio and presently i am using the same app that you have suggested . yes it is cool and does ur job in minimum effort.

  • @abigailgorton thanks for your info will play around more with snagit :)

  • @kristi-hines @davidgadarian thanks for the info.  @kristi-hines will obviously look into the post. as my next question to you would have been how to make images SEO optimized :)  thanks for the help

  • @prasantnaidu I have been using “Greenshot” for many of my screen shots and really like the ease of use and functionality. I haven’t used as often with blogging but on several projects and day-to-day tasks I really enjoy using “Greenshot”

  • Lol since the two I have used have not been mentioned one single time they have now been removed. I’m such a noob :(

  • @prasantnaidu

For PC Users I highly recommend this free one called ScreenHunter.Love it, very easy and quick.
For Mac Users, in Utilities you can use iGrab. Again very easy but saves as TIFF.  So I downloaded a free app called CaptureMe and that’s a good one too and will save as a JPG by default not TIFF.
But the one thing I love about iGrab is that I use it alot with Photoshop. I just take the screenshot and then copy and paste it into a new Photoshop file. Very easy :D

    Enjoy,Heather :D

  • I just hit the Print Screen button on my keyboard, open up a photo editing program, paste it into a new image. and save. I can edit it to cut out anything that I don’t want to show up (like the 10 zillion tabs I have open in my browser) before sending it.

  • @nicoleetolen You might want to look into Greenshot or something similar that is mentioned in these posts! Greenshot follows the print screen functionality but you actually are able to select exactly what on the screen you are wanting and once selected it goes into an editing screen. I find it extremely helpful!

  • @blogsbyheather thanks for the info. I am having fun with Jing these days and its super cool :)

  • @nicoleetolen use to do the same for long time :) but now using Jing and liking it too :)

  • @alexandrabriggs thank you for the info, will give a shot if i dont like Jing :)

  • These all sound like very good programs for the quick and dirty screenshot. Is there an optimal program for putting your content into an html visually.
