Where do you find content for your blog posts? (6 posts)

  • Hi friends here at SME Networking Clubs.

@kristi-hines gave us some great tips on this subject in the webinar.

I get a lot of my info from white-papers, SlideShare and of course by asking friends in my Network. I have 2 Hotel Marketing Groups I manage on LinkedIn that has been a great resource of information for me. Plus I am also active on industry specific networks. There I get an abundance of great info.and I have subscribed to a most industry newsletters. Usually I take an 1 hr to just go over the info here.

Industry related events has been really great. Here I have had the access to all the slides and presentation also after the event. Similar to the info we got after the #10ways webinar.

What are some of the best practices you use to find great content for your blog posts?

    Cheers..

  • @aremorch Great tips!  Aside from question & answer networks (Quora & LinkedIn), blog commenting, and social networks, you can also get a good chunk of ideas from forums in your niche/industry.  Forums are a hotbed of questions waiting to be answered.

Another area, once you start blogging, will be your own inbox.  I get questions regularly through my Facebook messages, LinkedIn inbox, Twitter DMs, and email inbox.  If you search through yours, you might find blog articles just waiting to be written!

Webinars can also be a nice source, especially if they let the attendees ask questions in the end.  Just like yesterday, we only had a minute or two to answer questions, so I ended up emailing people more detailed answers and links to posts I’d already written on certain topics.  Some of the detailed emails I sent could easily become posts!

  • @aremorch I like exploring other blogs in my niche to see what other people are talking about.  I then create a list of topics based upon what I see people are writing about — and interest level of content by looking at comments, social share counts, etc.  I keep a Google doc with just topics and articles that I need to write.  I also spend time doing keyword research using Google’s Keyword Tool, Google Trends, Google Insights to discover new and hot topics in my blog niche.

  • @mikedelgadodigitalmarketer  I find it interesting sometimes to connect other industries outside of my main realm and then relate it back to my industry.   I find that when I do this I can grab an audience that I might not otherwise engage and have had success with adding them to my customers.

I also find that those that outside of my normal target are great cheerleaders when I speak or mention them/their business in a post.

  • @leilajones That is a great strategy, too.  I did that recently during Thanksgiving.  I have a bog dedicated to helping others use Google+ personally and for business.  I thought it would be fun to get Thanksgiving recipes and cooking advice from popular chefs in Google+.  Totally off topic, but fit with the holiday season.  I got responses from dozens of chefs and ended up writing this article:
59 Thanksgiving Day Meal Tips from Google+ Chefs and Foodies
Even thought my blog was only a few weeks old, the article quickly accumulated 93 Facebook likes, 35 tweets, and 15 Google +1s. And this is because the chefs and foodies shared the article with their followers.  I’m working on another article right now and interviewing university librarians on Google+ about best research advice to help students.  That will be published when students are busy studying for finals and writing papers at the end of the year.

  • I have set up Google Alerts for many of the keywords/phrases pertinent to the research I do for myself and my clients who need help finding material.  I also attend many webinars pertinent to my industry and I am constantly jotting down ideas for blogs.  I also search out thought leaders and get RSS feeds to my email inbox which provides lots of other ideas.
