What to do when someone hijacks your identity and comments on blogs (7 posts)

  • Hi everyone!

I would really appreciate your advice with this. Today I noticed a fair amount of traffic coming from a website I’d never heard of or visited while checking my analytics. I recognized a familiar commentluv link to a dental implant business that was spamming me big time (then I installed GASP–thanks Kristi). I clicked on the name of the commenter, and sure enough my website was linked…

I kindly asked the website owner to remove this person’s comment and suggested he check his analytics and named the country this spammer spams from.

Any other suggestions for protecting my identity and the integrity of my website.

    Thanks so much :) .

  • @lindaesposito That’s a tough one, but I’ve seen some spammers use well known people and businesses before.  I think they do it because they assume their link will get approved because the blog owner will recognize the name with it.

I would suggest creating a Google Alert for your name (http://www.google.com/alerts) and just monitor the results.   Unfortunately, I’m not sure of what else you could do except contact the business whose link was dropped to let them know of the activity.  Maybe the company hired an agency and is unaware of their unethical activities while marketing them.

  • @kristi-hines Thanks for the feedback! I don’t think this person is using my website b/c I’m well known, but maybe they have shrink fantasies…(I’m a psychotherapist).

I have a Google Alert, but this person uses “Julie” as their name, but enters my website. Found another spammed comment for another site this morning–ugh!

I will contact the business and let them know.

    I appreciate your input Kristi :) .

  • @lindaesposito @lindaesposito What is GASP?

  • @lindaesposito One thing you can do is set up this RSS feed in your RSS reader.

    https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=utf-8&q=link:http://yourdomain.com/&tbm=blg&tbs=sbd:1&output=rss
Just change yourdomain.com to your website domain.  This should alert you to any new links back to your website on blogs which should also include comment links.

  • @atlantarobin GASP ( http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/growmap-anti-spambot-plugin/ ) is a plugin for WordPress that adds a captcha in the form of  a checkbox to your comment form.  It helps deter comment spam that is pushed through software automation, thus lowering the spam in your blog comments.

  • @kristi-hines Thanks for this RSS suggestion–willl do.

Whew! Spent the better part of the morning asking unknown bloggers to please delete this comment or at least the entered email (mine).

FYI, although you probably already know this. I contacted my host company and they thought the likely culprit was the WP versions/plugins which weren’t updated by me. According to the “techie” spammers love to crack the codes of older plugins.

    It’s always something, right?

Thanks again for your expertise Kristi–much appreciated :) .
