What is your biggest challenge when it comes to blogging? (38 posts)

  • This question is open for all kinds of bloggers – business bloggers, personal bloggers, and professional bloggers.

What is your biggest challenge when it comes to blogging?

Please share whether it is keeping up with technology, getting an audience, developing content, promoting your post, or any other issues that you struggle with so we can discuss it further!

  • @kristi-hines For me it’s not content ideas, but forcing myself to create the time–in start up mode, it seems every day presents a new opportunity and a new challenge.

  • Making time to blog – plenty of ideas, not enough priority.

  • Finding the time to write. It’s a real problem, since I’m a ghost blogger. I can always find time to write for clients, which means I squeeze out my own blogging to make sure I get everything done.

  • For me it’s also got to be finding the time to blog . Not enough seconds in a minute…

  • Content for me is a cinch. The challenge is structuring and pacing for widest effect. I know what my most popular topics are but I have pet topics too. So finding a formula that meets demand and still is interesting to me (in other words, finding balance) is a little tricky.

I’m also on the verge of taking a year’s worth of free content and developing a marketing strategy to monetize it — at last!

  • I’ll throw in with the others and say that finding the time to write is the biggest challenge. I’m in the process of building my second blog, so there are some audience issues at the moment with that one, but I’m confident I can address that in the next couple of months.

  • Writing for different audiences.

  • @joanmuschampfagnani  @ernohannink @quirkytravel I can understand that.  Always something else you feel like you “should” be doing besides writing.

@erikdeckers I’m with you on that one as I do freelance / ghostwriting as well.  You spend all of your content ideas and time on clients with not much left for yourself.
@judithgotwald That sounds like a great plan Judith!  Good luck!

@redpointhq It’s always interesting, starting a new blog.  You’re used to the community you have on the first site and find that you have to start from scratch to develop community on the new site.  It always helps if you can lure some of your fans over into both!

  • Wow, finding time to blog is a clear theme here! How do you all deal with this currently? For example, someone told me recently that he found a plugin that enables him to blog more easily from his iPhone. What ways have you guys found to deal with the lack of time? @joanmuschampfagnani @ernohannink @erikdeckers @quirkytravel @redpointhq

  • As well as finding time to do the actual writing, it sometimes takes me forever to find the right images to go with the posts.

  • @torontocarol  I think Zemanta is very effective for recommending free-use images (and other supplemental media) for your posts.

  • @mspseudolus I just looked into Zemanta and will try it out. Any more cool tips?

  • For me Writing is the biggest challenge, after that converting readers in to the permanent readers. actually i dont have a perfect time to write blog, when i though something some quality post i’ll post actually that’s killing my visitors. now only i manage the whole thing but still have that same challenge.

  • @rachelmaskell Ha! Thanks :)  I actually learned about Zemanta here in another discussion.

The only thing that comes to mind at the moment is Curate.me. It sends you a 2x daily email of the most popular posts from all the Twitter accts you follow. It’s good for staying current, finding good things to share and getting content ideas.

Duct Tape Marketing just posted a good article on how to generate great content ideas:  http://www.ducttapemarketing.com/blog/2012/05/01/5-ways-to-create-dead-on-content/

  • Everything about blogging is challenging … writing the copy … editing … posting … fixing HTML when I accidentally deleted something … picking the images … and don’t forget promoting it on social media, responding to comments and maintaining the site. If we really thought through the ROI on blogging, many of us would quit … but then you get a response that inspires you and so you keep it going … exhausing!

  • Time is a big factor I like to write up detailed posts that really help people. In doing so It could take sometimes days for me to gather up all the information and then form it out into something helpful people can take away from it.

  • The biggest for me is finding the time to get it done, then is content.
    Kirsten – great resources, thanks.

  • Really?  Did Sean try to drop some ad code in this forum?  That’s funny..

Anyway, my biggest challenge with blogging is remaining consistent.  Consistency is key to building your audience, traffic, and exposure with any blog.

What about you?  Does consistency kick your butt too?

  • @erikdeckers I find that writing for other people takes the edge off of my ability to write for myself. Often the well is nearly dry by the time I get around to writing for me. That’s why I had to prioritize writing for myself above writing for clients.

My blog was my priority as I was building up my client business. Now that my client business is booming, I barely have time to do anything else. I’ve started setting aside writing days in my schedule so I can’t overlook this time or steal it for client use.

Just when you start to get a balance and things figured out, your business changes and you have to start all over again. You gotta love this life or it will drive you right off a short pier.

  • I’m pretty new to the blogging world. When I first started I thought I’d have all kinds of things to say – only 2 months into it and I’m running out of ideas. Or maybe I’m being too critical of the ideas I do have. Either way: Content for me is difficult. Combined with that is audience engagement. Obviously I’d like the ultimate result to be that we find new clients. But right now I’m just interested in getting some kind of feedback – even if it’s “this is the most boring blog I’ve ever read” At least then I’d know that someone out there is reading it. How do you engage your readers?

  • TIME – TIME – TIME

If you can find a way that I can duplicate myself, enhance my staff’s ability to decipher ESP thought zingers, or plug my brain directly into the cloud and spit out instructions to 8 different people, that would work too.

I enjoy blogging but everything we produce for my site must meet my standards.  This is our bottleneck. I have a passion to transform people’s lives through my blog but I only have so much time outside of my regular business.

  • I think increasing my audience and their participation on my blog is my biggest challenge.

  • My biggest challenge is writing on a schedule. I always promise that I will write three times a week or two times a week. But I almost never get my posts up on time due to my busy schedule. It’s definitely something I am working on.

  • @robertholland I have to agree that consistency is definitely a challenge, some days are just so busy and exhausting that it can be difficult to motivate myself but I set a goal to post new content at least 4 times a week and setting a goal has kept me on track.

  • Hands down, my toughest challenge is getting people to participate. I get an okay amount of visits for a blog that’s only a few months old and in a very busy industry, but I rarely get comments. I’d really like interaction. I just read a post by Christopher S. Penn on using “closing” techniques to encourage more participation, so I may try to implement those idea. I truly enjoy the challenges of trying to come up with interesting content, but when you don’t get engagement, you really start to question whether your stuff is interesting, y’know? I blog at robzie.wordpress.com, for anyone interested. I’d love some feedback from you smart folks on what seems to help you get people to engage!

  • Rob, I’ve checked out your blog – its great – but I know what you mean about getting active engagement!! Have you considered the commentluv plug-in whereby visitors are rewarded for tweeting/sharing your links and leaving good comments, in exchange they get a back link to their blog. It’s a fast way to gain traction in the early days. At the opposite end of the spectrum, have you ever seen blogs comments on HBR.com ( Harvard Business Review ). They are often 10 times more interesting than the original posts – and they’re pretty good in their own niche way! People argue/debate and try to outdo each other in an academic/consultant type way. Tons of comments on there, sparked by interesting posts. Just some thoughts for you ;-)Robin.

  • @robzie81 I feel your pain! I wrote an article recently on our blog practically pleading people to leave feedback and still no joy! :)

    http://www.hm-marketing.com/Blog/May-2012/How-do-you-stop-your-website-being-slippery

I must read that article by C.S Penn and see if I can also implement som new ideas.

  • My toughest challenge has been that of getting Audience feed back And converting of few visitors to permanent readers. To address these great issues,I have decided to create interesting contents In my business blog, profits base that relates to my industry with the needs Of the customers in mind.

  • @angiezahner Im new to blogging and finding the correct content has been a challenge for me as well

I think my biggest challege is writing content i’m not an “expert” in as my job is in a new industry.

Time is a big factor in wanting to write my personal blog…and when I do find the time I run into writers block

    the joy!

  • Finding the time to write.

  • Hi all – I’m a total Newbie to Blogging I’ve two WP pages. I set them up and have all the pages sorted & now to Blog…I’m not sure how to even start or what subjects to talk about. Do I speak about what is of interest to me or do I speak about what may be of interest to others? Do I approach blogging like writing an essay or do I write as if conversing. Also, I’ve had a couple of really interesting emails from other WP users whose blogs I would like to share….but I don’t even know how to do this….lots of guidance needed for this newbie

  • Hi Jagdeep.
I would blog about what moves you.  What do you see or hear about that just makes your hair stand up or that you feel totally compassionate about.
Those emotions will make your work stand out and come across as meaningful.
    Good luck

  • I have loads of ideas to write about, they just keep coming!
For not having done any creative writing for about 15 years I worry about how my work reads. No matter how many times I proof read a post there is almost always an error that a friend will pick up on. Where is it a spelling or grammar mistake, I worry about how a mistake will reflect on me as a blogger.
Does any one else have this problem? How long before you got better at it? Have you got any solutions or ways to improve my proof reading skills?

  • @chrisheffer I have the same problem in regards to others catching my errors…i’m interested to hear if anyone here has any tips and/or tricks.

  • For me it is finding the time to blog. I am the social marketing head at my firm so finding time to write on anyone of my blogs is a challenge. But I think it is really important to continue finding the time. This brings me to my second point. If you are a new blogger, it is very important to continue writing and update your blog on a regular occasion. It may seem that no one is listening or reading what you have to say, but the only way they will is if they see you have been writing for a while. For me it took a while and for a long time my traffic was very low, and then all of a sudden BAM, traffic just started to increase. So if I can say one thing its…..write write write
