What is for you Copywriting and SEO Copywriter ? (4 posts)

  • For me: Copywriting is the art of writing for promocional purposes like for Selling or for marketing and SEO Copywriter combines good copywriting skills with SEO techniques.
    And, What is your definition?

  • An SEO Copwriter is not just using regular copywriting skills with a splash of SEO techniques. They are writing webcopy.

Webcopy takes into account the medium (a computer) and the reader. It’s geared toward not just being “good looking” to search engines, but also (and more importantly) it’s geared toward engaging and being easily assimilated by the READER.

    • shorter easy to read chunks – optimally no more than 6 lines
    • Good use of headings, subheadins and lists (this is good SEO, but it also can be use to hook the reader into reading the next paragraph)
    • Writing at an 8th grade level (this isn’t because people can’t read, it’s so they can scan and assimilate the information easier and faster.)
    • Adding images to content. Good for search engines and even better to keep readers engaged and interested.
    • There are many other little nuances to webcopy, but you get the idea
Many of these techniques are part of SEO, but what I’m trying to point out that webcopy is not just about search engines. It’s about writing to be entertaining, informative and educational, and easily assimilated by the READER. SEO is just so that the page is more easily found by the reader, but pleasing the reader is the ultimate goal.

  • Hmmm… what new systematic name shall we make up to call real professional web copywriting post Panda, Penguin, Animal House, etc?

What about RIO for Reader Interest Optimization… for better and more fair ROI Return on Investments?

What shall our next acronym be?

And about that 8th grade writing level… It use to be that journalists were taught to write on an 8th grade level for newspaper reporting because that IS what research showed to be the average READING level ability of average newspaper readers. However, with the influx of more and varied immigrants here in the USA, and a struggling public school system that must teach English as a Second Language to students whose native countries’ average time in school doesn’t surpass the 8th grade, those “average” English reading levels have actually gone far below 8th grade.

That is something to definitely keep in mind as you write for the web… where English is easily misunderstood often in REAL time discussions on your website, comments, Facebook, Twitter, etc. It’s a challenge, to be sure. And one that should make everyone ponder their words and whether they can be misconstrued in any foreseeable way.

Good point bringing that up, Jules.
