What is a blog (5 posts)

  • This may sound stupid, but here it is. What is a blog – is it defined by the writing (content) or the technical platform?

If I blog about dogs using “blog software” it is a blog. If I write the same content on my company pages under news – is that defined as a blog? What if I write the same content on my facebook page – is that a blog?

  • Ah, that is actually a good question!

I think I can start with a quote from wikipedia:

“A blog (a blend of the term web log) is a personal journal published on the World Wide Web consisting of discrete entries (“posts”) typically displayed in reverse chronological order so the most recent post appears first. Blogs are usually the work of a single individual, occasionally of a small group, and often are themed on a single subject. Blog can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog.” If you would like too, you can read more here.

People started to realize other useful use of blogs rather than publish a personal journal!

So, they developed the idea as we see it today, blogs can be used for fun, and also for business and many other purposes, it’s even more powerful tool if used in the Media!

I remember that the Media coverage of the Iraq War was actually done by bloggers who was in the middle of the event, so there were no way for journalists to enter that time, this is how the idea of “citizen journalist” came out after that and changed the whole thing!

  • @arnizophoniasson

I define a blog as an online publication platform that allows you to easily publish content.

We call our blog an online magazine.

Here is what Wikipedia says “A blog (a blend of the term web log)[1] is a personal journal published on the World Wide Web consisting of discrete entries (“posts”) typically displayed in reverse chronological order so the most recent post appears first. Blogs are usually the work of a single individual, occasionally of a small group, and often are themed on a single subject. Blog can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog.”

  • @arnizophoniasson Hi Arni!  I usually define a blog as regularly updated with the ability to add discussion.  Some sites have “blogs” which are really just news streams where they publish announcements, but there is no interaction.  I think the interaction portion is really what defines a blog!

  • Thanks – I guess the main emphazise in the definition should be on the platform (including interactivity).
