What do you struggle with most? (22 posts)

Topic tags: blogging challenges
  • In regards to blogging, I struggle to post regularly (2-3 weeks). I don’t believe in just putting anything out. I’d rather wait until I have a meaning topic and quality content to match. Ideally, I’d like to post daily but I’m not sure how realistic it is given how much time I put into content creation.

If anyone has any tips on how I could improve I welcome it openly.

Also, please let us know what you are struggling with most in your blogging efforts so we can offer you insight.

  • Dewayne… I just did a blog post on this! We get all inspired by the quote ‘Don’t let good be the enemy of great’ but the first publishing of that quote (Voltaire, more than 200 years ago) was simply ‘Good is the enemy of Great’.. Subtle difference. In the really important things in life – marriage, parenting, conscience – we should all aim for GREAT. But with blog posts? I think 10 good posts, once a week are worth more than 1 great post. I am not perfect in my own publishing, but I think the best gift you can give yourself is an editorial calendar – plan it out for the next 6 weeks and stick to the plan, even if it means a smaller or less perfect post. • My goal is to blog twice a week, yet I find it difficult to come up with ideas with good to great quality. I have tip sheets, work sheets, articles, and other research I have gathered from blog experts that talk about content ideas and although I think they are great, I still have a hard time. And because I’m still trying to get my blog and business off the ground, I only have a few followers. So when I have posted polls and questions (as the experts suggest) to my blog and social media profiles, an average of three people reply.

I know it takes time to build a following and get my name out there, yet after six months I thought I would be farther along. I’m willing to put in the work and wait, it’s just that some days are more frustrating than others. Also, my blog is on Blogger and an opinion out there is to make sure your blog is privately hosted and use a site like WordPress as it supposedly makes a better impression. I have put off switching my blog to WordPress because I have a few questions and am confused by a couple of things, but I can’t seem to find someone who can clearly communicate the basics to me about it. I’ll keep looking, though!

I suggest reading tips from these blogging experts:

  • Finding time….
That’s probably what everyone struggles with, but we all manage :D
and I’m sure always looking for ways to improve.

    Heather :D

  • @mutunga I prefer just having 2 – 3 posts a week and having them all be quality. You could also consider doing 3 posts yourself and 2 guest posts, assuming the guest posts are as high quality as yours (and on topic).

My biggest writing struggle is just getting started. The blank screen is intimidating. I find that if I can at least get the outline going, filling in the details goes much smoother.

  • @karenataylor Thanks Karen! :)

  • @kristi-hines

I hear you. For some reason I’ve always shied away from guest posts, well mainly because I blog using my name as a domain so I feel that only I should provide the content though I know it doesn’t have to be the case.

I’m working on a new flagship blog for my business and I think I will allow some blog spots occasionally. It’s about the reader’s getting value at the end of the day right? lol :-)

Find time is definitely a common issue. I ask for more hours in the day daily, but I’m looking into getting a VA in 2012 to help free some time so I can focus more on the more important things.

  • @karenataylor

If you have questions about Wordpress please feel free to private message me and ask away! :-)

Thank you for sharing the resources.

Hi Dewane!Let me know how the Virtual Assistant works out…that’s something maybe I can do soon as well :D

That’s a great suggestion.  I do have an assistant who does help with certain elements of what I do, but I’m sure a VA does some other things..more administrative?

Others have told me about odesk.com as an inexpensive outsourcing company. I have not used them personally though.

  • I blog for our HVAC business and I am certainly NOT the expert.  My struggles:

    • Writing like I am the expert
    • Getting the information to be the expert
    • SPAM COMMENTS – how in the world do you all combat them?  I get an average of 10 a day and they are driving me MAD
    • Getting people to READ the blogs

  • Most of my struggles deal with still being largely a Techno-Dummy and not being comfortable with self-promotion. Also don’t have a competitive bone in my body — but I love sharing information. Go figure…

  • I struggle with these people who just don’t get how awesome my site, Our Special Families Village, is. Don’t they understand that it is the best thing since sliced bread?

    OK, seriously…

I struggle with monetization. I agree with the build a loyal following first philosophy but I also would really like to hire a VA (who is not me), buy a new car, get a logo designed and go on a cruise.

And I’m not a very patient person.

Oh well, all in good time.

P.S. If you are thinking about hiring a VA and have questions, please feel free to ask me (since I am one). I promise honest and straightforward answers and will not try to get you to hire me. Really.

  • @mutunga focus! I made an acronym for it:Fixate On Cause Until Successful-now step one before doing that is specifically selecting and defining the cause! So that’s the biggest challenge. Then FINDING TIME to do it. Thanks to everyone for the helpful information. (It takes a village!:) ) @sandrapearson @jessicasmith @blogsbyheather @kristi-hines @karenataylor @abigailgorton

  • @mutunga I struggle most with adding graphics, pics, charts, etc. I’m not very adept at finding or formatting them into a blog. Any tips/articles/guides would be welcome.

    Thanks!Marc

  • I struggle with all of the above…trying to do all this myself and I am no where tech savvy on any of it…all i know how to do is make wine – or in my former life I could arrest you…LOL

    Thanks

    Cindy

I am not sure how you want to go about adding new content to your site but i use something called an article spinner. I write one quality article and spin the article over 200 times. 40% uniqueness usually does the job.

With my articles on submission autopilot, about 3 times a week, new content is added to my site leaving me time to create backlinks and traffic.

Skype me at Fobusiness or send me a message if you would like to talk more. I can show you where to get the article spinner i use as well as help you learn how to use it.

  • @jessicasmith  for Spam.. Have you implemented Akismet yet? It is the best value $59 / year you can spend. Ask back here if you have any problems activating it – it will get rid of 99.99% of your spam.

  • @marcbaldwin   Marc, I do  my picture editing (including adding a border in most cases) before i upload the picture to the blog. There have been a couple of discussions here about photo editing tools here. I use Snagit. Great for resizing, color editing, adding captions. It saves the jpgs to a hiogher qulaity that some other tools. FWIW I also own Photoshop but that is a lot more functionality, time and overhead when all I really want to do is resize and add a border.

  • @abigailgorton Thanks so much for the great advice!marc

  • @abigailgorton  Thanks!  I have never heard of it, I will check it out!!

  • @marcbaldwin  Zemanta is excellent for recommending free-use media (pics, videos, other stories) for your blog posts.
