What are your favorite WordPress Plugins (26 posts)

  • What WordPress plugins would you not blog without?  Share any posts, links, or plugin names that would help improve one’s blog whether beginner or veteran.  Can’t wait to see what everyone brings to the table!

  • @craigdesmarais Hi, there are lots of plugins that i love to use in blogs. Most plugins i use are aimed to make blog seo friendly and fast loading. Here’s list of my favorite addons that i use regularly.

  • @moinshaikh thanks for the share!  Looks like we are on the same page about the Jeff Bullas post.  http://www.jeffbullas.com/2012/03/13/10-must-have-wordpress-plugins-of-2012-every-blogger-should-know-about/

  • One that has saved my behind on more than one occasion:
    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-db-backup/

Everybody focuses on the bells and whistles, but those don’t do you a lick of good if your database is corrupted or you get hacked and have to restore to an earlier, clean version.

This thing emails me a backup of the database on demand and on schedule, including all the added tables from other plugins.

Not very glamorous, but extremely useful. :)

  • @dianeaull absolutely extremely useful. That’s what should be included in the list :)

  • @dianeaull Yes this is also a necessity! It would be devastating if you lost everything.

  • Thanks, Diane, really good to know. @dianeaull

  • WordPress SEO by Yoast
    Digg Digg (social share buttons)
Blubrry PowerPress (mp3 player and podcast to iTunes)
    Contact form 7
    Akismet (anti spam)
    SimpleURL (use for aff links)
WP Remote (keep plugins and WordPress up to date for multiple sites)

  • All in One SEO Pack is really good too: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/all-in-one-seo-pack/

  • @craigdesmarais Here’s my short list. I keep my plugins to a minimum for performance reasons.

WordPress SEO by Yoast (I used to use  All in One SEO Pack until I tried Yoast!)
Contact form 7 (love how easy it is to customize!)
Akismet (must have, best spam protection)
CommentLuv (adds latest blog post from commenters)
Login Lockdown (slows down people who are trying to break in)
Executable PHP widget (lets me write code for a customized list of categories in the sidebar)

  • Hello Craig,

Here’s my list of wordpress plugins:

1-Easy WP SEO And SEO Plugin By Yoast (SEO Plugins)

2- LoginLockDown (Stops login Attempts after certain number of fixed loging attempts)

3- BulletProof Plugin. (.htaccess website security protection plugin)

4- Digg Digg (Social Media Sharing Plugin)

5- Gravity Forms (Contact form and Biz Forms plugin)

  • I keep my plugins to a minimum after getting hacked once and learning my lesson. Regina Smola over at WP Security Lock has given some good advice on that issue. Always keep them to a minimum, make sure you keep them up to date, don’t download plugins that aren’t updated regularly and make sure your plugins are compatible with each other. That said, here are my most important ones:- Wordpress SEO by Yoast - Akismet - Contact Form 7 - BackWPup - Commentluv - Sexy bookmarks (though I’m looking at switching to Digg Digg) - Redirection (for redirecting affiliate links)I’ll have to take a look at that Login Lockdown too. Sounds worthwhile.

  • Gravity Forms.  I seriously could not live without it!  I really don’t like coding forms.

OnlyWire – This shoots out blog posts to a few bookmarking and social networks.
Discus – Commenting system.  I just like it because I don’t have to login a billion times or create a bunch of accounts to comment.
Shareaholic – I love to share!
Simple 301 Redirects – Super simple way to redirect old urls to new ones.
JetPack – WordPress’s bundle of apps.  I particularly like the stats dashboard because I’m an analytics nut and it’s a high level overview of traffic, page views, keywords searched (as much as Google, so don’t get your hopes up on figuring out what “other search terms” actually is…sad, I know) and referrers.
ScribeSEO – The SEO in me tells me NOT to share this one but the “I love to help” side (I’m a Gemini…you know the twins?) tells me I need to share this one.  If you’re struggling with SEO and have no clue what you’re doing, it’s an absolute must.  Even if you’re well-versed in all things SEO, it’s so nice to just click a button and see what you missed. <3

  • Here is another great post with some other great plugins: http://heidicohen.com/most-useful-blog-plug-ins-for-non-geeks/

  • As well as a number of the ones that are mentioned above, I like one called WP Simplicity. It helps me find topic related images and Youtube videos.

  • Hey everyone!

Just came across what looks to be an awesome social sharing plugin called Sociable!  I will be adding it to my blog (http://starkventure.com/blog) tonight.  I will let you know how I like it.

@torontocarol – I will definitely take a look at WP Simplicity! @iamconsulting – Thanks for sharing about OnlyWire and ScribeSEO.  I will check them out as well.

  • Thanks to everyone for sharing.  This discussion has been extremely helpful for me.  One more I would add Twitter @Anywhere Plus

  • Do any of you guys know of a pluggin that can allow me to, in the dashboard, change the author of the post. I have seen themes that allow this, but I dont want to change my entire theme

  • The one I can’t live without is the one that gets me back up and running if something should happen to go wrong: BackupBuddy

If your site crashes you can be back up and running like nothing happened in a matter of 5 minutes or less. AND, it doesn’t require a Ph. D in Geek to use it either.

  • Other than maybe Askimet to catch spam, the best WordPress plugin is no plugin at all. They are a magnet for conflicts and problems.

Most of the functions they perform can be easily hand-coded in. And when you start with a theme package that supplies great tech help and stays updated to the latest WordPress release, you probably won’t need very many plugins at all.

    That’s my two bits.

  • @ Cale … you don’t need a plugin for changing the author of a post. You can do it at the edit post level. Choose Quick Edit and use the Author drop down box.

  • @ Don that was just my question, this theme doesnt have the option to do that. That is why I need a plugin for it, because I dont want to have to change my entire theme. But you are right, pluggins cause problems

  • This is all very useful, I have a question, should you get rid of the plugins that you deactivate, I’ve kept mine there in case I wanted to use again.

Also I did have http://www.sexybookmarks.com on my WP site, but had to remove it as it disallowed my logging into my WP admin to make any changes! So I’ve been using sociable, but would like pinterest to be listed there as well.

  • Everybody has posted some really good plugins here – many of which I use.

I tend to be more security minded so a really good plugin for monitoring the fies on your site is called Wordpress File Monitor Plus.

Monitors files on your server and alerts you to what has been added, deleted and modified. Great for finding compromised files if you do get hacked.

  • Own a GAMING blog – here’s my pluggin recommendations:

    Akismet - blocks spam comments
Genki Youtube Comments – imports YouTube comments into blog comments
Share Buttons by Lockerz / AddToAny – easily share a post with other social websites
Topsy Retweet Button – Retweet/Track tweets from posts
User Role Editor – Good for limited access to multiple writers/contributors
Social Media Widget – Easily puts a widget with all your social media links/icon.
