Video blogging? (7 posts)

  • Does anyone use video blogs? If so, do you use a webcam or have something more professional? How are your vlogs different from your written content?

We use both – video and written blogs. However I have not seen engagement out of either and I’m wondering what I’m doing wrong.

  • I suggest you try the following:

    1. Make a video promo of your written/Video blog and keep it about 30 seconds long.
    2. Upload the video to Youtube.
    3. Market the Video according to your budget. I suggest PPC to a targeted market.

You can use a video setup according to your budget. Some even use their phones as they do not have the technical or financial resources to do something more involved.

  • Hi Angie, I do video and this is what I do:

I have shot myself talking infront of the camera. I have used my webcam and also my sony cybershot. It doesn’t really matters but the higher is better.
After recording myself I have used windows movie maker or similar software to edit the pieces, put text and all.

Then I uploaded the video on youtube, I embedded the same on a new blog post having the same title.

How-To videos work great and I have got 100 subscribers in my account. Also I have posted screen recordings. These are some options you can use for this:
CamStudio -free app for windowsScreenr -online app with 5 mins limitJing -5 mins limit
You can also create slideshow videos using a software called Camtasia.

  • @angiezahner My husband is getting into video blogging.  He uses a Kodak Playsport for situations when he needs something waterproof and a JVC handheld HD camcorder for others (he’s an outdoor photographer).  For screencasts, he just uses his built in webcam on the Mac.  I think the main thing is having stable video – make sure your camera is set up on a tripod or flat surface and not handheld.  Plus, make sure the audio is good quality and you’re set!

  • @angiezahner,

    Two thoughts on this:

    • Make sure that you provide a transcript of each vlog underneath the video. This is good for both SEO purposes (search engine bots don’t understand content embedded in a video) and usability (e.g. if I am viewing your website in a public place without headphones).
    • If you plan on making the videos longer than a few minutes, you need to be SUPER engaging, otherwise people will start dropping like flies.

  • fyi ‘video blog’ is not really a correct phrase to use – you are making a ‘video log’ or ‘vlog’ — a ‘blog’ is text/written and not moving pictures.

    -good luck!

  • Have have used video in my blog on occasion. Not totally video just 1 per week or so. I like what @xtamal says about using windows movie maker to do some editing. I do this as well and a quick intro and music can be added to the background.  It all looks quite professional.

The videos I have done have been short informational pieces and no script required… I just winged it! :) and they look that way to!
