  • Is the value of what you post in what you write or in commentary received?

Simple question probably a more complex answer. One could assume it is partially both. What are some tips you have for generating comments?

  • @glengorham Thanks for the thought-provoking question. I’d say the value is in both the content of the post and the commentary received.

Tips for generating comments include things like coming right and asking for the readers opinion, e.g.  “Here are 2012 predictions from these well-known designers, after reading theirs please share yours.”

Readers have opinions and I think truly value the opportunity to be asked to share theirs. This is what makes blog posts social in comparision to a print magazine or newspaper article.

  • @glengorham

I’d say there is value in both.

Make sure your content is of high quality. It should help solve a specific problem. Be sure to reference other research or sources that reinforce your point, this add credibility. Simply ask people to comment and share their thoughts (It actually works).

As far as comments, you should try your best to answer/respond every comment. It shows that you acknowledge and value your readers. it’s also a place where more dialogue and commentary takes place. It also acts as social proof, letting people know this is a popular post and a ongoing conversation is taking place here.

  • I look at the quantity / quality of comments to determine whether a post I have written is valuable, but I also sometimes find that people will share a post they find valuable more often than they will comment. So both can be an indicator of whether visitors find the content is valuable.
