Updating to Wordpress 3.4 (8 posts)

  • If I’m already using a theme and I update to a new version of Wordpress do you have to pay for this update?  Will it change the look of my blog?  I’m assuming once I update, there will be more options. available like embedding tweets and  videos.  ANyone do this yet?

  • Mary, the answer to all these questions (except the last) should be No.

No, it won’t cost you anything. No, it won’t change the look of your blog. (Yes, I’ve done it.)

Remember, WordPress is free, so any and all updates are free too. And unless you managed to buy from a particular jerky theme developer, even the updates are free too.

And yes, you can have more options for embedding tweets and videos.

  • Hi Mary!  I updates to WP 3.4 a few days ago without any problems with my Genesis framework and Prose theme.  Also, I agree Erik’s comments.

However,  you need to check your current plugins to be sure they’ve been updated and are compatible with WP 3.4.  You can do this by going the Plugin Homepages and checking their WP3.4 status.

    Good luck to YOU!

  • Thanks to both of you.  @Demarciowash  So I go to my dashboard and check the plugins to see if they are compatible with 3.4?  What if there is an update to your theme.  Have you updated your theme?  There is an update to my Striking theme.  Do they charge to update the theme and does that give your blog a different look?
    Thanks for your help.

  • I didn’t have to update my theme to change to WP3.4.

I’m not familiar with your theme, so you may have to contact them about any additional cost. But that shouldn’t give your blog a different look.  My theme is exactly the same as before.

You can go to your dashboard, and on the left side right above plugins, you”ll see a catagory for “Appearance”.  Hover over it, and you’ll see a screen pop out to the right which includes “Themes”.  Click on that and it will tell you if your theme is up to date.

Let me know how it goes.  Take care!

  • Make sure all of your plugins are compatible, especially if you’re using a caching one.

  • @encoreperceptions Hi Mary,
When you buy a theme, they will normally tell you that you get free upgrades (It’s a very common selling point). If you are seeing the theme update within your administration screen, then you should get free updates.

When the updates aren’t free, they will normally put a link in your admin screen telling you to manually download and apply the update.

Please make sure you take a backup of your website before you update. This latest release (including 3.4.1) was released very smoothly, so very few people had troubles, but you should always play on the safe side. If your not sure how too, either contact your web developer, or search for a plugin that will run a backup of your system.

    Regards,Sam

  • Hey Mary (@encoreperception),

The thing I like to remember here is that there are three separate entities working on your Wordpress site …

    1. The Wordpress Core
    2. Your Theme
    3. Your Plugins

Each of these will have its own update schedule and if you got your theme from a reputable developer – they should all be free.

Remember, you should have scheduled backups running but anytime you upgrade or update, make sure you backup then as well.

NOTE: Wordpress 3.4.1 just came out yesterday and it DOES contain a few security fixes so make sure you run the latest.

    Have an awesome day!
