Turing My Blog Into A User Generated Content Site? (9 posts)

Topic tags: content, user generated
  • I have a blog (which for personal reasons I will not post the url of – I hope this does not offend anyone) which I started in 2007. Over the years I have blogged on it on and off but of late it has been more off than on. I have a lot on my plate at the moment at this situation probably isn’t going to change any time soon. Because of that reason, I have gone through periods of wanting to give up on it but can’t seem to let go!

One thing that happens now and then is that people email through posts that they think would be fitting to add to the site. That gave me the idea of turing it into a mostly user generated content site where the public (or should I see people interested in the subject matter of the site) can contribute posts. These would of course be moderated by me before publishing.

My question to all of is, do you think this is a good or bad idea?

  • Hi Gerri

    I think it’s a great idea!

A lot of successful bloggers end up with a blog that have more posts from contributors than by themselves.

I think you problem would be finding people willing to write for the blog, while maintaining the quality. But I think it’s a goal that is possible.

If you want, send me a private message with the address and I can take a look. :)

    Cheers,Russ

  • Hey Russ,

Thanks for the feedback. I spent the weekend looking around for a way of making the process nice and easy for contributors and myself and that is all just about done.

The next step (as you already mentioned) is finding people willing to write. There are a handful already interested but more would be good.

When I get things up and running I will send the link through to you.

  • @gerri50 There are lots of sites that are filled with content from multiple contributors.  My only advice is to make sure the content is good – sometimes, guest bloggers are really Internet marketers looking to exchange a so-so piece of content for a link.  Be sure to review everything carefully!

  • @kristi-hines Thanks for the advice! That is something I will definitely be keeping an eye on.

  • I’d say as long as you’re still going to moderate it before publishing, it sounds like a good way for you to get a bit of a break but still maintain your blog. Just set ground rules for contributions ahead of time. Good luck!

  • @kristi-hines @gerri50

Kristi – that’s so true. I wish I understood why internet marketers feel it benefits them? I know it’s a numbers game. But I hard a great explanation about cold calling that applies here as well:

If you call/spam 100 people and get one sale (1% return is pretty good these days), then you’ve made 99 people really angry disrupting their day and wasting their time. If they were interested, they would have been searching. So, now when they are interested, they won’t be looking for you.

Gerri – if you are moderating for approval, I think it’s a great idea. It will ultimately open up your blog to a new audience that probably didn’t even know you existed.

  • @nicoleetolen Thanks! I already have a few ground rules set and I still intend on keeping the blog “mine”

  • @donpurdum Very true about the new audience. Hopefully that will be the case and that they will like what they see (and read).
