Transfer of Wordpress to Go Daddy (18 posts)

  •  I am transferring my Wordpress.com blog over to Go Daddy for hosting.   I have read a lot about the Genesis Theme and am thinking of purchasing it for my blog.  I’ve read that it is easy to use. My question is …after I complete the transfer to Go Daddy should I first download  the  Wordpress.org software before proceeding with adding the Genesis theme?  Thanks for your help.

  • @encoreperceptions Hi Mary, i have a better deal for your hosting. I have a deal from http;//www.bluehost.com that allows me to provide Web Hosting service with Unlimited Disk Space, Bandwidth, Emails for only $1 p/month.

According to http://www.customerhostingreviews.com/ BlueHost is the Best Web Hosting in 2012.

I think my offer makes more sense; better features and way cheaper.

    Let me know

    Regards…

    Dan

  • Mary, to your question: yes, you need to install WP before you add the Genesis theme. If you like more help and cannot find it via GoDaddy please let me know.BR/Eddie

Like @wintherconsultsaid, you should download wordpress and you don’t have to but if you’re like me and want to get started right away, it’s good to have it set-up.

    On a side note –
StudioPress’s Genesis framework is really nice to use.  They have a great built-in SEO program that rivals the best SEO plugins available.  I’ve built and customized a lot of themes for it, so if you need help getting started with it or have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask.

  • @encoreperceptions Hi Mary!  If you go with GoDaddy, they have a section called the GoDaddy Hosting Connection that allows you to install WordPress from their dashboard.  You just have to answer a few basic questions (name of your site, username, password) and it will install WordPress for you.  Then, you can install Genesis as a theme into WordPress.

  • I’ve just transferred the  domain name to Go Daddy.  Now I have to go back in and transfer the contents of my blog.  Looks like I have to export it from WP by downloading it and importing it to Go Daddy.  Any tips on doing this easily?

  • @encoreperceptions

You need to go into your current site dashboard under tools (left hand side of the screen, near the bottom) and click “export”.  It’s default is export “all content” which includes posts and pages from your current site but you can do just pages or just posts as well.  Once you decide what you’d like to export click “download export file”.

Assuming you have already set WordPress up on your new URL, log into your site and under the same “tools” section of the sidebar, click “import”.  Click “wordpress”.  Next, find the file you downloaded with the export.  Then click “upload import file”.

Let me know if you have any questions.

    Good luck!

All I have done is transfer my domain from WP to Go Daddy.  When I bring up my url – I don’t even have my current WP theme.  I don’t think I’ve set Wordpress up yet.
Do I select a theme first or transfer my contents?  Thanks for your help.

  • @encoreperceptions You don’t need to have a theme. WP will have a starter theme already installed when you set it up.   All of your posts and pages will convert to the new theme once it’s installed.  Do you need some help installing WP?

  • @iamconsulting  Thanks for the info. I want to try this for myself so I actually can do it.

  • @encoreperceptions

No problem!  The offer is open if you need it.  Good luck! =)

  • Oooh, so glad I came across this post. Thanks @encoreperceptions for asking the question and @iamconsulting, you helped me out too!

  • @emmagillings

    That’s great!

  • @encoreperceptions did it work?

  • @richardmclaughlin

I’m stuck on the template. I’ve got the content over but can’t get the  template “Regulus” to show on Go Daddy’s side?

  • @encoreperceptions can you see the theme in WP? Under the theme menu on the left?

  • @richardmclaughlin

No.  I can’t see it under Themes on my dashboard.  I have to go into the  WP site where I first started my blog.  The theme is called” Regulus” and has two versions. I used the picture of the night sky with the moon and the stars because it coordinated with my blog name “Making Your Business the Star”. I like that theme.  However, I wanted to purchase either the Genesis or Thesis WP software for more functionality.  Which do you think is easier for a beginner user?

  • @encoreperceptions this theme http://www.binarymoon.co.uk/projects/regulus/ ?

Download the .zip file to your PC.

    Either:

    1. Admin -> Appearance -> Themes -> Upload and select the zipped file. WP knows what to do after that.

    2. Unzip the file on your desktop. Go to GoDaddy and Upload the unzip file to /wp-content/themes/

if you do option 2 you can’t rename the file the theme is in or you risk a glitch and failure.
