Trade Google+ for your Blog? (12 posts)

Topic tags: Google+
  • I have been reading a lot of discussions (and have seen it in action) of many people transferring over to Google+ as their main blogging platform and using RSS to feed their website. What are your thoughts on this?

  • @jasonwiser I think it’s best to always keep your own blog site b/c you never know if something were to happen to Google + or if Google thought you were violating some terms/conditions.  Also keeping your own blog site allows you to have a ‘home-base’ for your other social networks/websites/media can find you easily.  So, in short, no, I do not think this is a good idea, but that’s just my opinion :)

  • @jasonwiser Hey there Jason what you suggest is not as outlandish as it seems. However, I agree with  @devanianjali you really need to own your own content.

G+ just may be able to push your posts especially if you’ve received comments to positioning prominence. This would make for an interesting experiment!

  • A viable alternative I suppose. But what about the SEO benefits of having blogs housed within websites? Also when people are reading comments or blog articles on my site, I know they are also being tempted with relevant or related content in the sidebars and footers that I have chosen to be there.

I haven’t been using G+ for long but I intend to use it for conversation and research, getting peoples opinions and feedback on ideas or industry issues, that I can then feed into blog posts I write on my website? that way i’m keeping G+ as a social environment where I can hang out without too much professional tension, and my website as my more professional outlet.

  • @jasonwiser I’ve seen a few people (most notably Chris Brogan) move from Facebook to Google+.  And I know that some photographers have seen better response from Google+ than their blog.  But overall, you should keep all of your platforms and use Google+ in addition, not as a replacement.

To echo others, your self-hosted blog is yours.  You don’t have to worry about the design changing without your go ahead (like Facebook losing default tabs in the new Timeline profile) or violating terms of service (except that of your hosting company which is usually pretty lenient compared to social networks).  Plus, there’s customization that you can have on your own site that you’ll never get with a social network.

  • @jasonwiser  I would think that one would need a blog and G+.  That being said … IMO G+ seem to favor content posted on G+ over any other content. I’ve started testing to see if Google gives G+ content more weight than other content … time will tell. But why else would G+ give you like 60,000 characters to use in a post?

  • @amyhallbiz This is exactly the reason I ask this question. The 60,000 character limit is a great point. I too have been looking for research based information to answer the SEO favoritism of G+. seems there is a lot of speculation, but I have not found the perfect article yet to satisfy my curiosity. I tell you what, I will definitely not ignore G+.

  • @jasonwiser  I got lots of Google love when I first started my G+ profile. My name is as common as a loaf of Wonder White Bread, 161,000,000 results today. When I put up my G+ page I didn’t have a website, and my G+ showed up IMMEDIATELY at P1R4. When I saw that I was a G+ convert! Now that I have a website, my website shows up where my G+ used to be. (Of course this is all with me being signed into Google.)

  • @amyhallbiz And the signed into Google part is a biggie. So if you sign out of Google you may not get those results. But, if people in your circles are signed in, and they do not toggle the hide personal results tab, then you will have a very good chance for P1 on their search. There a lot of people that do not know to uncheck and turn off. So, this is why people like Chris Brogan are knocking it out of the park with G+. 87,702 people have him in their circles, and his activity will get preference on their searches.

  • Thank all of you for what your sharing. I am new to Google+ but following discussions and learning. I am very grateful for everyone’s input.

  • An interesting idea but I would never give up my own blog.  After watching Facebook’s antics and Google’s antics I would never want to trust either of them, or any other shared site for all my online presence.  Spin your articles and post them on G+ and your own blog, link back and forth and to things like Blogger.com and wordpress.com, and use so many other platforms but have your own blog

  • @topmarkmedias I agree that this is the best solution. Incorporate it purposefully into your mini-net, but don’t give it the helm.
