  • Hi Ive just completed my website & have a f/b fanpage for Image Sense & have been writing newsletters, but are now considering writing a blog. How do I get started? Helpful tips would be appreciated! should I just have a blogg page on my website or create a new domain?thanks Joanne

  • @JoanneMcEwen  A blog page should be on your website, whether it is fed in from Blogger or Wordpress.com or Typepad or just on a Blog Tab on your website.   Firstly, you then have full control of it on your website (meaning it is your content on your website, not on some other site).  As well, when you blog on your website, incoming traffic can check out other pages on your site.  When I read someone else’s blog, I check out who they are, what they do, etc.

I wrote a short eBook for clients and you can download it here:  http://www.scribd.com/doc/51734135/A-Simple-Guide-for-New-Bloggers

  • @jomcnz I would have my own wordpress installation on my server. You could either have your blog as a sub-domain or as an addon domain. For me I prefer a sub domain yoursite.com/blog/ and just upload your blog to the blog directory.

  • @jomcnz wordpress is powerful and will help your voice. Make sure you are populating it out to a facebook fanpage for sure, don’t forget twitter, G+ etc…

  • @jomcnz Because you’ve been writing a newsletter, you know what topics appealed to your readers, raised questions, or generated a lot of comments. These would be good topics for blog posts especially if they tie in to the content elsewhere on your Web site (if you add your blog to your Web site as @dcoville001 suggested).

  • Hi @dcoville001 thanks for the e-book it looks helpful. My website that I built is based on a wordpress template, which I tweaked to use with static pages, but I guess I could still have a blog page?@ptwylie,@glengorham to host my blog without interfering with the website??As you can probably tell I dont know that much about the technical side, but have learnt alot along the way!! Good point@debbielynnava, the reason for a blog is to get customers to my site, although with a service based business, they do need to be locals. Thanks everyone

  • @jomcnz
With WordPres, you would have a blog as well. Who are you hosting with.  You can normally add a Blog option in your Nav Bar. You can create a “page” and under template there is a “blog template”. Some themes are different. What theme are you using?  And there are other ways as well to get it to happen. When you add the “page” then you can go to Appearance, Menus, and create a new menu, add/select all your pages, and create a custom menu (nav bar) which includes “Blog” as one of the options.

So you’ll have your website, home page (front page), other tabs/pages like Contact Me, Services, etc.  And then one that says “Blog” that goes to your posts.

  • The biggest step is the first one — getting the gumption to open the blog account. Don’t spend a lot of time worrying about self-hosting and such — all that can be taken care of later. You just have to get going. Others have given you advice on how to link to your web site, etc. So I’ll give you basics. 1. Open the account. Just follow the directions of the blogging platform you choose.

The second step should come first, but it often stops the process from happening at all.

    2. Create an editorial calendar. Make a list of your favorite categories (which you know from your newsletter experience) and come up with 50 potential post topics.

    3. Write at least 10 of them.

    4. Start posting twice a week, while you work on the other 40 posts.

Somewhere in the middle of this list you will find your voice and best audience and you may ditch the rest of your list . .. at least for the time being.

But that’s good news. It’s means you are a BLOGGER!

From this point, you will be finding your own way, exploring photos, videos, widgets, plug-ins, interacting with other blogs and bloggers.

    Let the games begin.

  • thanks @blogsbyheather you are so right I can do that as it was on my website, as it was originally a blog page that I have adapted. It is hosted with netregistry.au. & my them is Chameleon which I got the template through elegant themes. the only issue which is pretty major at the moment is I am unable to log onto my wordpress admin as it comes up with an error msg that has come about with installing the sexy bookmarks plugin. I have been in contact with them but have not got anywhere for the past month so are unable to get into the back end of my website!I like @judithgotwald the steps you have provided are great, do you think I could use some of the content from my newsletters (I’ve only written 4!) which are linked on a page on my website. I presume my audience would end up being a different group of people.Im really going to have think hard about 50 different topics but I guess it is breaking information down into smaller chunks. How long should a post be? I would always use visuals as well. All your advice is exactly what I needed to start, thanks so much. Joanne

  • You can start with blogging in just 7 simple steps:

1- Book A Domain Name Hosting

2- Set Your Blog With Good Theme And Plugins (Wordpress Kills Every Other CMS… :) )

3- Write Quality Contents On Consistent basis

4- Market Your Content By Doing SEO and Other Marketing Tactics

5- Be Active on Social Media

6- Make Connection And Relations With Other Bloggers

7- Build Some Links For Your Blog

And Keep Repeating Everything After No-3…

  • My only addition is a recommendation to be regular in your blog postings – whether that is once a week, twice a week, etc. People seem to like to know what to expect. I have a regular schedule but occasionally add an extra post.

  • Hi Joanne,

I am currently developing a guide to developing your personal brand and I’ve done a couple of posts about why you should blog and what steps you should take to make it successful. I would love some feedback about them from someone starting out on their journey :)

  • @ideasbynet  I read your posts above and thought they were extremely informative and useful.  I am about to start a business consultanting business and will be starting a blog as part of this and your post “A Beginner’s Guide to Blogging” is perfect!  Thanks so much for sharing.

  • Hi Diane,

Thank you for your kind response. So glad you enjoyed it and good luck with the blog :)

  • You’ve gotten a lot of great advice. I especially agree with @jordanem. One tip I’d add–if you do miss posting a time or more, don’t write a “sorry I missed writing for a while I’ve been so busy because…” kind of posts. They are boring. Just come back with strong content right where you left off.

  • I agree with @Charlene Kingston. Don’t apologize.

  • @ideasbynet  Thank you, Carla.

  • @ideasbynet I feel much better educated after reading your beginner’s guide.

I also feel a bit dumb that I’ve been posting content to a blog for two years now that is basically self contained…if you don’t find the link from our website, you don’t find the blog…?? And I’ve bookmarked all of the blogs that I follow, but didn’t add them to our blog…?? And I’m not linking the blog to the company FB page…??

I have some work to do!

  • Hi Renee,

So glad to hear you enjoyed it :)

The post is part of a resource which is designed to help people build their online presence from scratch, so hopefully we are going in the right direction with it.

If you need any help when you’re connecting your profiles feel free to email me at carla@ideasbynet.com

    Thanks

    Carla

  • Congratulations on getting started @jomcnz !

I agree with the above, in particular that you want

    yourdomain.com/blog vs blog.yourdomain.com

In the first example, the blog is part of your site in a more integrated way for visitors and analytics tracking. Blog is just a section or folder in the site structure vs. a subdomain.

I also agree with sticking with the newsletter topics or subject areas but find a way to make it different. People should have a reason to follow your blog AND still subscribe to the newsletter.

    Good luck!

  • thanks to everyone who has posted, I havent quite “bitten the bullet” as yet, due to a month or so of internet problems, but have been gaining info as where to start & have found your posts to be extremely helpful.the next big step is finding the content & style of my posts – How long should a post be?? I will probably use alot of visual content as I do in my newsletters.Should I call my blog a blog or ezine/online magazine, on my website??What do you think?thanks againJoanne
