Tiny URLs (5 posts)

  • As blog URLs seem to be getting longer and longer, one day last month I woke up to find out that Tiny URLs automatically wants to change my web addresses. This occurs on both Blogger and Wordpress.

Now, I’ve used TinyURL in the past and do love it, especially when I have a newsletter address that’s about 135 characters long…

but am I the only one having trouble with this automated URL change? There are some addresses that just don’t work, then I have to go back and change them, ensuring that I use the control+z to change it back. I know that there’s that button in the top right that says “don’t show this again” (or something like that) right next to the undo… but I just haven’t had the time to research yet whether that button will make the permanent change to the TinyURL.

At this point, its still only a mild annoyance. What are your thoughts?

  • I have yet to experience a forced conversion to a tiny url. I know wordpress offers automatic short links for things like Twitter which is convenient, but bit.ly is better for SEO purposes as I understand it (not entirely sure).

What is the long form of the address?

  • @joncardwell when you say it’s changing the URL, is it changing it completely, or is it adding some extra stuff to the end of the original URL? It could be adding a campaign code, or changing it to something that will still point at the original page.

What happens if you follow that shortened URL in another browser window?

(This is why I use Bitly. ;-)  )

  • @GlenGorham @ErikDeckers Thanks for the help.  I think I figured out what it is. I use Mozilla Firefox as my primary browser and when I updated it last month I inadvertently gave the okay for the TinyURL add on.

It changes the whole url to a shorted address from TinyURL, sometimes it doesn’t seem to  work right away because in the lag time to process the assigned url it may show as a broken link for a minute or two.

    Thanks again.

  • @joncardwell glad to hear it.
