The next generation Cooking Blog (14 posts)

Topic tags: video in blog, YouTube
  • I scanned an article the other day that said the next big trend in blogging would be Video-based Cooking Blogs (i.e.Video bloggers serve offbeat food TV)

    Not Cooking Vlogs per se, but more along the lines of a “Rachael Ray”-styled show now that YouTube, etc has become so popular and accessible.

    I can see how this particular genre of blogs would lend itself well to video, but what about other niches?

    Have any of you gone the video blog route?

  • I just co-launched a Health/Beauty/Wellness blog (www.beforliving.com) providing expert information to consumers.  While we are still in the early stages, our platform is heavily focused on Expert Interviews recorded via SKYPE and so our intent is to move forward with more of a VLOG than a BLOG.

  • I can see this type of format working well for just about any DIY hobby.  Fishing, Hunting, Remodeling, etc.

    Nice site! That’s exactly what I was talking about.

    The only thing I wonder, and I mention this because I’m one of those guys that has a hard time watching an interview, is how long you can keep someone’s attention on an informational video.

    The video I looked at was the “Natalie Sisson” one and it ran 14+ minutes.

    Nothing wrong with that, but for me, unless I’m really into the topic, I don’t know that I spend that much time on a video. But again, that’s just me.

    That being said, I do like the site and where you are going with it.

  • @pushingsocial

    Right on target. I can just see Larry the Cable Guy doing a DIY video on moonshine!

  • @warrenveach If you’re curious about a particular niche and video blogging, try either googling keyword “video blog” or (better) go to YouTube and try the same search, then look at the number of views per video.  That should give you an idea whether video blogging works with a particular niche.  :)

  • @kristi-hines

    Good advice.

    However, I was more thinking about the types of blogs that lend themselves to video easily, not necessarily any particular niche.

    We’re seeing more and more video being used in all forms. I remember not too long ago that one of the phone companies shot an entire series of commercials with a cell phone.

    I’ve also seen people doing video resumes, leaving video messages for their kids, and of course, video emails.

    I’m wondering if that isn’t the evolution of many types of blogs…going from written to visual.

  • @warrenveach All I know is personally, I’m not a video watching person – I enjoy reading.  So when I go to a blog post with a video, if there isn’t a transcript, I usually leave.  :)

  • @warrenveach <I’m wondering if that isn’t the evolution of many types of blogs…going from written to visual.> I think there is an element of self selection here… video blogs attract people who enjoy having their content served that way. That’s their personal desire and no point in disagreeing with it. There are plenty of others, myself included, who really really do not want our content that way. We would prefer to read it and some of us harbor a sneaking suspicion that some of the vlogs are laziness – 4 minutes in front of a camera rather than an hour of writing and editing. Again – it IS subjective. There are 2 – 3 blogs I would follow more if they would just write it! I personally want to read not listen. So they will attract followers who like watching, and I will find another blog in the same field to fill that gap in my own desires.

  • All great comments.  My feeling is that there is a wide range of approaches that will appeal to the wide range of viewers.  While our site does emphasize the video interviews, it also provides content in the form of written copy and podcasts.

    One of the reasons that we offered the video interview was that many of our friends mentioned that they enjoy watching or listening to podcasts when they workout.  And many of them will also multi-task by reviewing something while having the video running in the background.

    It’s definitely a changing world and a changing world requires options.  With that in mind, I would suggest that there is definitely no one-size-fits-all approach and that is probably why there are so many different blogs to accomodate the varied subscriber-base.

  • Great site. What program did you use to record the skype interview? @gregorybuford

  • I agree, times are definitely changing and options are the name of the game. Everyone is finding what works for them and their clients.
    I like written as well as podcast and video.
    There are times I can multi-task and listen although it’s much nicer to give my full attention. Just isn’t always possible.

  • @kristi-hines

    I’m pretty much with you. If I am reading, I can skip forward through the article and determine whether or not I’m going to go back and give it more time. With a video, that’s harder to do, as you can’t tell what you skipped.

    @abigailgorton

    I suspect that with some, there is a bit of the laziness factor there, but some people just enjoy being on camera. Me, not so much. :-)

    Also, and hopefully someone knows the answer to this, is there an advantage SEO-wise to video over written articles?

    @gregorybuford

    Please don’t take my comments wrongly. I can definitely see where the videos have a place, and serve a purpose. After all, its hard to read an article while you are jogging…

    @rebeccacohen

    My multi-tasking abilities pretty much end at reading the paper and drinking coffee….

  • I am using Vodburner.  So far, it works pretty nicely.  We have had a few problems, however, with synching video and audio.  Not sure where the issue is arising (software vs. Skype vs. connection) and so we have had to convert a few interviews to podcast when this happens.
