The Fastest Comment System of WP, Disqus, Liverfyre, FB, & IntenseDebate (8 posts)

  • Since blog commenting systems are a popular topic here, I thought I would share this article from Marketing Land today.  They did a test with Pingdom on the fastest commenting systems, and this is how they ranked.

    • WordPress (Built-in comment system)
    • Livefyre
    • IntenseDebate
    • Disqus
    • Facebook
So for those who are deciding on what comment system to use, this should give you some food for thought.  Additional things to think about include:
    • Will your audience login or show their personal Facebook profile publicly to comment?  For sites with a lot of traffic and an audience used to third-party comment systems like Disqus & Livefyre, it’s not a big deal.  For smaller, less tech-savvy sites, it could lead to less comments.
    • Who owns your comments?  If you were to remove a third-party comment system from your site, what would happen to your comments?
    • Do you need to respond to comments privately? With WordPress, you will at least get comment author’s email address (unless they choose to enter a fake one).
    • Who backs up your comments? With WordPress, you can backup your database.  If comments are stored on a third-party system and the system crashes, are your comments safe?
    • What happens to comment formatting if comment system is removed?  Some people find that they lose the threading offered in Disqus / Livefyre when they change comment systems.

  • Thanks Kristi,

    Very helpful :)

  • Wow, thank you very much for this @kristi-hines !  I haven’t had a chance to use Livefyre yet. I’m curious to see what its like. I try to be careful about my loading time too. Dyane

  • Thanks for this post @Kristi-hines had this discussion at the twitter #blogchat last week. My thoughts would be determined by your audience, on my personal blog I have disqus but now I’m thinking it may be better left with the WP (but do you moderate comments?) Then for my business blog (under construction) I’m wondering if its better to go with livefyre or disqus – my audience is local small business owners that don’t necessarily know a lot about social media aspect of biz. Any suggestions?

  • @debbiespice You’re welcome!  I would say you have to moderate with any comment system – spammers can still use Disqus and the others to get their links in.

I usually suggest that if the audience you want to comment is not used to blog commenting, then go with the base WordPress system.  Anyone can enter a name and email address, and local businesses would probably like the ease of being able to share their link as well.  They might be deterred if they have to sign up for something though – even if there is an option to bypass, they still might not feel comfortable with it.

  • Makes sense @kristihines will probably go back to wp comments as I have akismet which can catch most of the spam. thanks :)

  • @kristi-hines Thank you for sharing helpful information so consistenly. Just thinking to switch from discus to wordpress built in commenting system.

Not sure what will happen with the existing comments on my blog.

    Can you help?

  • @kristi-hines I just found out that you have already answered this question previously here.
