The Best Commenting System (50 posts)

  • I tend to change commenting systems periodically because they each have specific benefits that I enjoy, but I’m currently using CommentLuv. I often hear that Disqus is the best but I’d like to see what you think.

What comment system are you using and why?

  • @mutunga I like the plain and simple base Wordpress system with the Commentluv, GASP, and Subscribe to Comments plugins. I know that SME uses Disqus successfully, and a lot of people seem to like Livefyre.

  • Disqus FTW

  • @kristi-hines

I’ve been noticing more and more people switching to Livefrye but I haven’t exactly stopped to figure out what all the fuss was about.

    What’s GASP?

I like using Aweber’s plugin or WPSubscribers with CommentLuv, but I’m thinking about moving to Disqus.

  • I use the standard WP commenting system but am looking at adding Facebook Comments.

Anyone have any experience with any of the Facebook Comments plugins out there?

  • @mutunga Livefyre seems to generate more discussion among registered Livefyre users. GASP adds a checkbox to your comment form that acts as a captcha to reduce spam comments.

  • @howwhowhen I don’t see Facebook used often – Techcrunch and The Oatmeal are the only sites I frequent that have it. I know people who won’t comment because they don’t want to share their private Facebook profile with others. I also wonder what happens to the comments if you decide to switch systems. Are they forever trapped in Facebook?

  • the best comment system is, the one my readers will actually leave comments on! I think the ones that have captcha are too much trouble for some folks, i have seen people not leave comments or pursue a search further if they run into captcha.

  • @kristi-hines

Thanks for the insight on GASP!

I’m going to look into Livefrye more but I’m not sure if I’ll ever switch there.

  • Disqus all the way because users can login with twitter, facebook, openid, anonymous etc…and since it’s the most popular, people will have no problems using it.

CommentLuv seems to attract a lot of spam lately.

  • @mutunga

We love DISQUS for a few reasons.  First, it is externally hosted, removing the server requirements from our system

Second, we like the single login across platforms and the fact that so many people already have setup accounts with DISQUS, making leaving a comment super easy.

Third, the threaded comments and like buttons on comments are really cool.

Fourth, but this one is most important…  Multiple admins can manage our comments as they come in.  This makes it real easy to track spam, deal with upset folks, etc.

  • @kristi-hines I have slightly different question.

I am using DISQUS , if I want to switch back to my wordpress theme (Genesis) commenting system.

What will happen to my existing comments on my blog?

Thanks for your help in advance.

  • @rshahbaz

I recently switched commenting systems and all my comments were left intact.

    I don’t think you’ll have a problem there :-)

  • @mike-stelzner

Thanks for the insight! Disqus seems more advantageous, so I think I’ll give it a try.

  • thank you @mutunga for you help.

Did you switch from DISQUS ?

  • @rshahbaz

    your welcome!

I switched from IntenseDebate to CommentLuv

  • @mike-stelzner

    Have you always used Disqus?

I’ve heard that because it’s hosted externally that when you switch comment systems you lose your comments. Can you confirm/clarify this?

  • @mutunga

I have been blogging since 2006, so no not always.  However we did from the start with Social Media Examiner

  • @mike-stelzner

    ok

I hope this isn’t the case because I really want to use it now lol

  • @mike-stelzner @kristi-hines I didn’t know there was a choice and have just had available the comment space that comes with my wordpress blog. Is that bad? Why does this need to be changed?

  • I’ve tried them all but in the end kept going back to the default commenting system. My readers were complaining about social integration. They didn’t want it. Another reason for using the default system was for speed. Adding a plugin will slow a site down even using an asynchronous script. I wrote about commenting systems a while back. http://scottwyden.com/what-commenting-system-is-on-your-website/

  • I am interested in learning more about the Disqus plugin

  • @deairby Nothing wrong with the base WordPress comment system at all.  I still use that over other plugins.  Disqus is really nice if you want to have additional moderators of your commenting community.  If it’s just you, the base system is just fine.  I prefer it actually.  :)

  • @rshahbaz I’m *pretty sure* (not 100% since I’ve never used it) that your comments are all saved in WordPress, so if you remove the Disqus, the comments will still be there.  I think the worse case scenario I have seen was on a blog where the custom theme didn’t have base comment formatting, so when Disqus was removed, the comments needed some CSS help.  Most themes come with that, StudioPress included.

I do know that some people have had issues though – maybe see if you can get someone on Disqus support to give you the steps to uninstalling the right way so you don’t lose anything.

  • @kristi-hines Great, one less thing to try to figure out! It’s just little ole me so I don’t need to get complicated. Thanks.

  • @kristi-hines thanks Kristi for the detailed answer. Much appreciated :)

  • I use DisqUs in one of my blogs, and Facebook in another. I saw no problem in the Facebook Comment System, and it prevented the Trolls and the spammers to apper in my blog.

  • been using DISQUS for a year now and its been cool :) Facebook comment system has been used by lot of the blogs but i find DISQUS much more better than FB.

  • I recently started using CommentLuv. It seems to have potential … we’ll see.

  • @kristi-hines

Thank you so much for pointing me to this thread! Feel free to move/archive/delete my one, didn’t see this post earlier. ;-)

  • @kristi-hines I can’t find the link, but I recalling reading that Facebook comments live in the Facebooksphere. Did I just create a word? : P

Once you remove it from your blog, your comments go with it.

  • I used CommentLuv for quite awhile, and then I had a bunch of people emailing me saying, “I tried to leave you a comment, but I couldn’t.”  I switched to Disqus and have had no problems since.

I also worry that if I switched to the basic WordPress comment system, I would lose all my comments. So I’m probably just going to stick with it.

  • @leifmartinez That sounds about right.  From everything I have read, the only way to access your comments is through the Facebook API.

  • @mike-stelznerWe love DISQUS for a few reasons.  First, it is externally hosted, removing the server requirements from our system

That’s a good reason to use an external commenting system, rather than WP system, especially for blogs that gets a lot of interactions, now and after my blog reached 40,000+ comments, I am really considering another solution, but can not let go commentluv that easy because I like it, and what’s more important is that my blog community like it!

@projsocial , i assume you already know that CommentLuv is not a commenting system, but it’s an addition to the default WP commenting system, so what I think is that you’ve had an issue with WP comments itself!

One thing I hate most is when I am forced to use and stick with some plugin for the rest of my life! So, it’s really important to think twice before changing your comment system as it’s not easy to switch back and forth!

  • Does anyone know that if you install a new comment system like CommentLuv or one of the others…what does it do with your existing comments? Are they migrated into the new system?

I have Blogger, TypePad and WordPress users.

    @kristi-hines

  • I use the Livefyre system due to real-time social conversations and connections. Having to wait for an email to correspond to a comment isn’t very effecient to me.

  • I love Disqus. It still allows users to login and comment thru Twitter, Facebook, Disqus or OpenID but I retain the comments instead of them ending up on Facebook. I had a few issues when they first launched but those all seem ironed out. The best part? Being able to moderate comments on multiple blogs from one dashboard.

I’d heard great things about CommentLuv and GASP so I did try it, but I seemed to get more spam with that system than Disqus so I went back.

  • @blogsbyheather , CommentLuv is not a comment system, it’s a WP plugin that ads more features to the default Wp comment system, once you disable the plugin, things goes back to normal!

From the other side, Livefyre and Disqus are commenting systems that are hosted away from your blog, they replace the WP default system completely, those plugins doesn’t affect WP, and you still can go back to the default commenting system anytime you want, you only need to restore comments into your WP.

  • Facebook comments are the best :)

  • So thankful for this question.  I have been using Disqus, but was wondering if I should try others.  This thread helped me immensely, thanks.

  • @snouraini @leopoldpanovi @jfouts @kristi-hines @rlmosca @mike-stelzner

We just installed DISQUS. I like the look, interactivity, and ability it gives to share.

    Looking forward to it!

  • @donpurdum tnx – i’m going to try it!

  • @donpurdum I think you’ll love it Don. If you have any questions feel free to message me, I have it on several sites.Cheers,Janet

  • @jfouts

    Hi Janet, will do! Thanks.

  • When you installed the Facebook Comments system did it wipe your original comments, existing comments?@leopoldpanovi

  • Do you use WP or what blogging platform?@leopoldpanovi

  • @blogsbyheather I’m using WP – I integrated facebook in WP by my own. I’m not using plugins for that – because I didn’t get what I need :) I want fully take advantage of facebook platform (open gaph, comments, like buttons, ghost pages..) and nothing gives me that.

  • I was recently told that SEO for commentsis not taken care by DISQUS, any thoughts guys ?

  • I just used the standard that came with blogger/google/blogspot.

I did try disquis ones but didn’t like that if I changed, my comments wouldn’t remain on my blog.

I like a comment system where I don’t have to keep signing in to comment or using captcha.

  • Thank you everyone for the discussion.  I am so backwards that I did not even suspect that this was an issue.  The discussion has really helped.  My blog will be up soon and I think I will try DISQUE.  It seems to to have what I was expecting from my comment section.
THIS HAS BEEN SO HELPFUL.  Right now I will definitely be a sponge for information and not a giver.
