Switching from Wordpress.com to Wordpress.org (6 posts)

  • Hi,I have a blog on wordpress.com  - thinkingofisrael.com  - I got the .com domain through the wordpress.com website for $18 a year. I think this was probably premature. From what I understood from the recent blogging seminar,  it seems to makes sense to move to wordpress.org, I understand I need a host which would then install the blog through the one click feature. Am I correct that the domain I got through wordpress.com is not such a host? Would the appropriate host be able to use the domain name I have now or will I need to get another one? Thanks for any light you can shed on this. Barry

  • I checked on WHOIS:  http://www.register.com/whois.rcmx and the domain is registered in your name and doesn’t expisre until June 2013 so it is yours.  I would recommend Bluehost who is very Wordpress friendly.  http://www.bluehost.com/,  I have recommended them as a host to many of my clients and have had no problems.  They have video tutorials, online support 24/7 and you install Wordpress.org very easily in one click.  So far all m clients paid about $90.00 for a year of hosting which is less than the standard $125. or more with most hosts.  AND, when your domain comes up for registration in June 2013, they take care of the cost of the domain for one year for you as long as you are using them as your host.  There are also tutorials on You Tube and (I think) on Bluehost to show you the steps it takes to transfer your blog posts from Wordpress.com to your new Wordpess site.  Hope that helps.

  • My apologies for typos!

  • Diane,Thanks so much for the information. I will definitely check it out. So basically I own the domain name and now need the host, and once I have that, say with Bluehost, I can just transfer the blog from wordpress.com to wordpress.org?Barry

  • @BarrySpielman   Yes – you can either check the Bluehost website for a step by step tutorial, a You Tube video or Google it.  I just did and found this blog post by Problogger:  http://www.problogger.net/archives/2009/01/03/how-to-move-from-wordpresscom-to-wordpressorg/ but there  are many others.

  • @dcoville001 Cool! Thanks!
