Suggestions, copy writer or web content writer – which will suit? (11 posts)

  • I am looking for a someone to write up pages on my website and I’m not quite sure whether to go with a (seo website) content writer or copy writer.

I have decided to get stuck into my website – i like my design and layout, but i wanted to add a lot more pages and re-word some existing pages.  Hence wanting someone who can write and understanding seo.

Can anyone suggest a really good content writer/copy writer (preferably in Australia)? Cheers

  • @petaminter12 I don’t have a suggestion of someone specific, but either should do just fine for what you are looking for.  I would aim for someone high-quality though – some SEO content writers will just focus on the optimization, but the copy itself will not sound that good for visitors who actually want to read the page.

  • @petaminter12 I agree with  @kristi-hines. Your copy needs to be SEO but it also still needs to be easy to read. When interviewing I’d suggest looking for someone who is able to understand and connect with your target audience. SEO may get them onto your page but ultimately it’s your content that will kept them there or help convert them to customers. So it needs to be relevant and engaging. I’d take some time to think through your objectives for your revamped site. Not just the look and feel but what you want your website to do for your business. That will help steer the direction of the content and give you ideas on how to develop it more. Hope this helps.

  • You have gotten really smart advice here.

When I write copy for a website, I write for the visitors first, and then go back an enhance the SEO lightly. It’s so important to create a great visitor experience on your site using words. That should be the priority.

  • It is my contention that any copywriter worth his/her salt today understands SEO content creation (full disclosure: I am one). For the “heavy” copy, have your blog visible on your home page to enhance your SEO, but for your business description, the copy should be light, include bold, italic, bullet points, etc. to enhance SEO. Frankly, this is the “Age of Distraction” (TM) and no one has the time or inclination to read a lot of copy on your website. Get to the point, and quickly. Rule of Thumb: Mini-Skirt Style Copywriting – Long enough to cover the subject, short enough to be INTERESTING!

  • @petaminter12, as a professional writer, I can tell you that a good writer knows how to write, period. They may not be able to jump styles — from creative fiction to newspapers to tech manuals — but a good copywriter will be a good writer.

In fact, unless you’re interviewing poets and novelists, you should be able to pick a good writer.

Now, whether they know SEO is an entirely different matter. However, SEO is becoming less about keywords and more about writing quality. Still, you need someone who knows SEO, like @denisedorman.
So, to shorten an already too-long answer, find a good writer who can handle newspaper writing or blog writing. They know how to write for the greatest number of people. And a professional blogger is going to know how to do SEO as well. (And if you can’t find that person, Denise or I can give you a few basic lessons on SEO.)

  • @denisedorman I love Mini-Skirt Style Copywriting. I’ll be borrowing that one, for sure!

  • @petaminter12  I don’t have a suggestion for someone in Australia, but I do have a suggestion for someone from the US. Jessica at http://www.endeavorwriting.com/ is awesome. She knows SEO and she knows writing. She has ghost written for a client of mine and did a very good job with the subject matter and the keywords.

Another client of mine used Wendy at http://WendyLemlin.com. She has beautifully written webcopy for her long term care planning site. This subject can be kind of dry and Wendy made it come alive.

  • Thank you for everyones advise. @kristi-hines @cherelleleong @charlene-kingston @erikdeckers @denisedorman

I’m definitely looking for a quality writer. My business offers a service so I suppose when people come to my site their looking for information.

I want my site (writing) showcase that by business is unique, creative, friendly (warm) and informative. I’m very much in a male dominated industry and looking for something that will set me apart from my competition. A good writer will help tremendously.

  • Would you be interested in working with a US writer and then editing for Aussie spelling and punctuation issues? I’ve been working with @DeniseDorman for a short while and already like what she’s done.

  • Thank you @amyhallbitz for the suggestions.

Thank you @erikdeckers Yes I will concider US writers. I have just started to search for writers so am still searching the net.
