Starting a blog (8 posts)

  • Background is I work for a company that has a small site separate from their main site of about 40-50 pages.  I am trying to get a blog started to help generate some traffic, inbound links, etc.  My questions are:

    • Hosting it as a subdirectory of my site will help inbound linking/SEO efforts/etc, correct?
    • I would it help if I registered a domain (thesomethingblog.com) and redirect it to blog.domain.com?
    • We are getting some help from outside writers I plan to have them write 5 articles while our inside writers write some and then post them once a week to get the blog started.  Should once a week be enough to get us started you thing?
Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

    Some thoughts:

    • In terms of facilitating link juice flow, set it up as a subdirectory, i.e. http://www.company-website.com/blog/
    • No need to buy a unique domain just for the blog; it’s a waste of time and money. The blog should sit in a subfolder on your primary domain (subdomain would be OK too, but I recommend going with a subdirectory).
    • Once a week is OK, but it’s honestly the minimum. Make sure it’s QUALITY material, and stay consistent with it. Over time, I’d try to aim for twice per week, but consistency and quality are key.

    Good luck!

  • @lukaspleva  Yes, I agree, mine has done fair traffic and search engines pick it up regularly…although, I think I need to go back to WP, it would probably be even better!

  • @gregorymacke  Hi Gregory.  Here are my thoughts on your questions.

    • Yes, if you put the blog on yourdomain.com/blog then any links to your blog will help strengthen the domain as a whole.
    • Registering a separate domain and redirecting it to a subdomain wouldn’t help your main domain gain any SEO authority – your blog would then be treated like a separate entity.
    • It really depends on your industry.  For example, if you were trying to have a strong blog on social media or SEO, then you’d probably need to do a few posts per week since many of the top blogs on those topics typically post daily.  Different verticals have different posting frequency needs.

  • @gregorymacke What’s really important is that you get the most SEO juice from each blog post. That means you need an SEO plugin. I have used All In One for years and loved it, UNTIL I first tried Yoast. I love the way Yoast helps you to make sure that you have the keywords in all of the important places.

Have your writers write the content for readers. Then, edit them for SEO. That’s how I do it. Good luck!

  • @kristi-hines will a subdomain work well too?

  • Hi, I have never written a blog before but seeing as how I have just started my home based business I guess I will need to. I am new to this so any feedback on where I can blog for ‘free’ is welcome.

  • Hi all, in response to the OP, content rocks. This is why yahoo has acquired some of the content creators, big bloggers post on a daily base etc etc. This content should be compelling enough.

Blog about your company seems to use blog.yourcompany.com -this way it’s a separate site and only publishes company news.

For the best SEO results, create yourcompany.com/blog/
this way each of the new blog posts will add up into the index count. Also have comments enabled. Self hosted wordpress is the best way to go here.

@SusanKing I didn’t had the money to buy ads, this is why I started to write blog. I am receiving hundreds of hits everyday on auto pilot just by blogging. Blogging is a white hat approach (make sure you are helping people with fresh content) and your views and network will grow and you will make more money.
