Some basic Wordpress problems I need help with, just starting a new page… (12 posts)

  • Ok so I have a couple of quick questions, sorry I am just trying to get this BASIC thing sorted today and launch, the first question is why oh why aren’t my simple contact forms working??

Every time I try download another version of a pluin, and go to widgets and drag the widget to side panel it never shows up….EVER.

The second is why oh why are my ‘pages’ displaying differently to my main post. The main post has everything aligned, i.e. the text and images are flush on the LHS with the header and menu, but on the pages it is kind of all over the place and starts about half way down the page??

Argh help please! I will shut up soon!

  • Hi!  I have been MIA for a few weeks – super busy – but I think there are simple answers to your questions providing this is a Wordpress.org blog on your domain?  If it is a Wordpress.com site, then answers would be different.  Please advise…

  • @arty I’ve never gotten one of the sidebar contact forms to work.  I just use a separate page using the Contact Form 7 plugin.

Not sure what you mean about the pages vs. posts.  Do you have a link you can share with us…

  • @dcoville001

I have no idea what you mean sorry.

This whole Wordpress thing is way too complicated for the average person. And I consider myself not too shabby at this kind of thing.

I have a domain and hosting service. I downloaded the WP software and uploaded to server, I log in to the WP Dashboard through my domain.com.au/WP-admin.

I hate blogs. I am trying my darndest to stay as far away from blog as possible which, seems to be not only impossible with WP, but also confusing to the point where we can’t even clarify which is which here.

A blog is a kind of layout and general format for a web page right? Vs what? A webpage not having those particular characteristics? Hmph.

I don’t know why the answers would be any different.

    @kristi-hines

Here is a link to a project.

  • @arty can you make it clear whether you are using wordpress on your own hosting site or using wordpress.com i.e. wordpress hosting?

  • @arty sorry to ask already answered question :(

First of all, i understand your frustration, but i assure you, blog (especially wp is not that much complex). For your form question, i am looking into it.

  • @arty @kristi-hines sorry to inform you but simple contact form worked well for me. I had installed simple contact form in my test blog and worked well, i sent form and got email tool.I followed these steps:

I logged in to my wp blog panel, then from left admin menu(vertical), go to pluggin, click on add new. Now in plugin search box, type simple contact form (if you have already installed, deactive, once you found it, click on install now–>activate plugin. Now in the vertical menu again, go to appearance tab–>widget. Here, you will see all widgets. From this area, drag simple contact form to right side area just beneath primary widget area (here you’ll have all active widgets). Finally, click on small down arrow next to title (simple contact form) in the right side widget area, then a setting tab will be opened where you need to click on setting link (there will be a notice like click here something like this) upon click on click here link, setting tab will be opened. Now, you just have to enter email address on which you want to receive form feedback from visitors, you can also change any field name or text title.

That’s all,Let me know if it works or not. It worked fine for me.

  • @artbitch I hear what you are saying:

“I hate blogs. I am trying my darndest to stay as far away from blog as possible which, seems to be not only impossible with WP, but also confusing to the point where we can’t even clarify which is which here.

Wordpress.com gives you very limited functionality and is on THEIR site.  You have the Wordpress.org software downloaded on YOUR site and it is far more functional and changeable and is your content and only gets changed or edited or deleted by YOU, not Wordpress..

Maybe you are confused between a page and a post?

A Page is where you create an individual page which appears as a tab like other websites.  But because this is Wordpress software, it works like a website but also has functionality to be JUST a blog.   That is rather a simple description but may differentiate it for you.   A further note:  Many pages can be created but Posts are all on one page and can be set to the latest posting appearing first or the other way around.  So when you are in the Dashboard, you indicate New Page for a New Page and Tab and New Post when you are inserting a newer post but all the posts are under one tab.

I think what would also help you understand is to go to You Tube and type in search terms for Wordpress Tutorials – there are tons – maybe if you watch a couple of them it would clear up your confusion.

I would offer to go thru a live tutorial with you by a remote program where I could share your computer screen or mine and walk you through it while on the phone but I think You Tube would be just as good a solution.

Let us know how you are doing with this.  Don’t give up!  You’ll “get it” in no time.

  • @arty Hi Arty, I have checked your website and I came to know of the following 2 answers from your questions;
Q1: Every time I try download another version of a pluin, and go to widgets and drag the widget to side panel it never shows up….EVER.
Ans: You should you use the “Fast Secure Contact Form”. you can install it from plugins>> search with the name>> install it & once its activated than you can make your own choice fields in that form as it has a lot of functions and most of all you can embed it in the sidebar only just copy & past the code which this plugin provides you in the plugin settings.

    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/si-contact-form/screenshots/

You can download that plugin for above link as well. It is very easy to use everywhere you want you contact form should appear.
Q2. The second is why oh why are my ‘pages’ displaying differently to my main post.
Ans: I don’t know which theme you are using for your website but this error mostly comes from the CSS/stylesheet settings which your theme is using to design your website layout.
You have to make changes in it to look the same as you want to.
Hopefully, this will answer your questions.

  • @arty Your contact form should be on a separate page not on the sidebar. For the sidebar you normally would have a sign up form to your newsletter, free giveaway, etc. This is where you build your list.
Contact Us is reserved for those visitors who want to talk to you, or someone in your organization that can help them with a problem.

  • @moinshaikh @moinshaikh @dcoville001 @ayaz1 @ptwylie

    Thank you for your reply.

To answer, no the contact form didn’t work. I tried this multiple times with the same simple contact forms (fast secure etc).

Have watched many tutorials and am not wasting any more time on this.

I think this is why people pay someone else to do all this silly running around and troubleshooting in WP. You need to be paid when it takes you two weeks to work out how to make a button or move some text. And I’m not, I do it for the love. Shish.

    Thank you for your replies.

  • @arty agree to your thought art, may be you are right about paying someone else to get the thing done rather than wasting the time.
