Sometimes WordPress will use the post tags as the meta keywords (which is what happens on SME.com) unless meta keywords are specified in the meta keywords field of the All in One or other SEO plugin. So they’re not really harmful unless you’re going overboard. Post tags can be helpful for organizing and referring to content on a specific topic – SME does refer back to specific tags throughout posts to help readers find posts on popular topics. Back in the day when meta keywords were a ranking factor, it was suggested to not go over 256 characters, and from the few posts I just spot checked on SME.com, they were not over that.
