Should I syndicate my blog? (10 posts)

Topic tags: RSS, syndication
  • I’m fairly new to blogging and have a wordpress blog www.12SouthPilates.com

I recently connected it to networked blogs (honestly not sure what I did but it seemed like a good idea!) but I keep getting asked if I want to syndicate?  I’m not really sure what that would mean or if I should or not?  Anyone have some thoughts on this to share with a blogging newbie??

    Thanks!!

  • @luciebcus Networked Blogs will syndicate your blog posts to your Facebook page. The latest two posts on the Facebook page for my photography site (https://www.facebook.com/photostry) are examples of how Networked Blogs pushes your latest post out onto your page.  :)

  • @luciebcus From my understanding, syndicating your blog would be pushing it live to their network. This means that they could post any of your content as they deem appropriate. What type of network did you join? I’ve found very few networks are actually worth joining, but the rare gem can be a valuable resource to driving more traffic to your site, thus helping build up your community.

  • @kristi-hines  Thanks- that makes sense!!

I hook up all my blogs (and my clients’ blogs) with NetworkedBlogs, but for most of them, I don’t publish the blog feed to Facebook or Twitter, because I’ve read numerous studies and recommendations that say that more people see and are likely to click the link to your latest blog post if you post the link (and a teaser) manually.

I started tracking “reached” statistics through the NetworkedBlogs feed vs manual posting on several FB pages I administer, and there’s no comparison. Posting manually reaches AT LEAST three times as many people as the NetworkedBlogs feed.

Long story short: I would set up a NetworkedBlogs profile so people can easily subscribe to your blog via Facebook.

I would manually post teasers and links to each new blog post on Facebook.

You might try an app called RSS Graffiti for automatically posting your blog’s feed. I found info about  it here: http://mashable.com/2011/11/06/facebook-apps-business/

  • i syndicate my main blog thru NetworkedBlogs

however im starting to get some issues with delay.

though i think in this day and age, content should ideally be published literally in real time, this isnt the case.

i remember reading somewhere that manually syndicating content to FB was more effective.

i think ill be doing this approach as i have no control over when NB syndicates my blogs posts.

manually, i can post my blog to my FB page at a time when most people will be reading it.  i think this strategy will work better as sometimes NB has posted my content in the middle of the night.  by the time people get up to read it, it wont be in their feeds and be pushed down.

    just a thought  :)

  • @laurachristianson That is a very good point – I always suggest that people post manually to social networks, but even with the potential for better reach, some still want to find automated methods.  I think since NetworkedBlogs is within the Facebook system (or used to be at least) it has more potential than outside 3rd party tools though.  The 3rd party affect might be changing as this post suggests - http://blog.bufferapp.com/facebook-stops-penalizing-third-party-apps-focuses-on-posting-quality.

  • Someone also recommended  Social RSS as an app to do the auto posting from your blog to FB.@luciebcus @kristi-hines @laurachristianson

  • http://www.onlywlire.com  is a pain to set up but once you do,  it will send your blog it will send your blog to about 32 sites of a social nature.  Go to the site, sign up, get the plugin and follow the directions.  You will have to sign up for all the sites befcre it will work.  You can also syndicate your blog to blog directories etc using an rss feed.  I am on networked blog but I like my blog to go everywhere there are authors to reach.  I have a lot of information in my archives that may help you.  Http://www.assistingauthors.com.  Good Luck.

  • Great ideas!  Just be careful to back track out of the places you are feeding from currently. Otherwise your posts will be duplicated and spammy.

    Have fun!
