Should I build a website for my social media platform? (4 posts)

  • Hi everyone,

Am starting to have some interesting conversations about the next phase for the AB project. Would like to ask you all your opinion on this.

The AB social media channel is growing slowly and steadily, I am now receiving media release’s, opportunities, giveaway’s etc in my inbox to share.

I wanted to build my community first, and then launch the website knowing that there already was a strong interest/existing community ready to embrace.

I am at that point. But should I build a website and why?

I spoke with a very successful and interesting entrepreneur about this and he brought up the whole money issue. Monetizing this thing, getting paid, generating money for artists etc. Basically money.

I am doing this for free right now and spending a lot of my time o this and have been for almost 1 year now. July will be the 1 year anniversary so good timing to have this conversation.

I had tried before to get something happening with all this web stuff but let it hit the backburner and am now back here again trying to help resolve this.

What kind of website should I make if I make one? Why should I do this and what are your thoughts on the whole money thing?

    Please share, love all comments.

  • @arty Good going arty. I suggest if you decide to go for a web, go for wordpress (self hosted and not that free wordpress hosted blog). Wordpress basically offers two types of site one is self hosted site which you need to host on your server (just like any other website) another type is, wordpress hosted which is more like a blog (like google’s blogpost etc.) If you want a business website, i suggest to go with wordpress self hosted site, it is free, opensource web system. you just have to download it from  http://wordpress.org/, buy a domain and a space from any webhosting company, and upload the downloaded wordpress stuff and build the site using wp system. This is somewhat technical so you better go for a web designer or developer. If you choose to go with wp hosted, you can sign up for a blog at wordpress.com and can build your blog/site yourself there.

  • @Art BitchThe reason to go wit a website is that you own that piece of the web. It is yours and you can set your rules. If other sites go down, cancel your account or change their rules, you would lose your contactpoints with your community. Also if you have Twitter followers, email-subscribers and other network contacts try to sync the lists so you would not lose contact with your followers.

  • @Arty you need a website and a website that you own the domain and hosting. That way you are safe. I have seen people starting with free domains and ended up losing their content. + the self hosted option is super professional.

Usually we create social media round your site, but your case you are trying to create website around your community.

Here is a 7 day free course I created specially for newbie folks like you to get from point A to point B. I hope this helps: http://www.sevendaycourse.com/website-setup-course/
