Share your lessons learned from 2011 (3 posts)

  • I just posted my top 8 most read stories of the year post, and realized it turned into more of a lesson sharing session than anything else. Some of my biggest takeaways this year were:

    * Update content so you can re-promote it
    * Create your own newsworthy content
    * Focus on SEO, including optimizing images for search
    * Take some time to make your content more consumable so more people share it (i.e. create an infographic).

Do you care to share a couple things you learned this year? Good luck in 2012 everybody.

  • @ryansleeper This year, I made the jump from 9 to 5 to working as a full time blogger/freelance writer. The thing that held me back from doing it sooner than later in the year was fear of having steady work. The lesson I learned is to alleviate that fear, you need to work double before you make the switch to land some clients to start with and make a backup plan that says “If I were to have no clients tomorrow, here are X number of things I can do to find work.” These bring peace of mind when making the jump!

  • A key lesson for me this year:

Remember (and not take it personally) that not everyone is going to like or necessarily appreciate what you write.

Something like:  you can please some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time but you can’t please all of the people all of the time.
