Setting up a Blog for $500 (15 posts)

  • I’m often asked by small businesses and freelancers about designing their blog for $500-800. The sites we normally work on start at $30K but I’d still like to recommend some best practices for people getting started on a shoestring. Advice if you only have $500 to spend?

  • @boxcarmarketing I would look for a great design.  With $500, you shouldn’t have any trouble finding a great premium theme to start with.  I’m not sure how much customization work would run you after that point though.

  • @boxcarmarketing depends on what you are offering them and your expectations of profit. Are you including the domain, setting it up? Setting up email addresses? Still you can offer a lot, it really doesn’t take anything but a little bit of time to give them huge value.

  • @boxcarmarketing I agree with Kristi.  The easiest and cheapest way is to find a theme that works for what they’re looking to do.  They can use sites like Themeforest.net, Studiopress.com and a gazillion others to find one and implement it rather easily.  They also offer support on the majority of the themes for people that don’t know what they’re doing.

  • Thanks @kristi-hines & @iamconsulting I agree that good design, even picking a good, adaptable theme is the place to start.

@glengorham I’m thinking of mostly passing people on to independent designers or wordpress developers as it’s not business that I want to handle. I do want to give steer people in the right direction though.
You’re right that even buying the domain and setting it up is a chore for some people just starting.

  • This is just a thought. You could hire a college student who has a lot of knowledge on this type of thing, have them do the project just as well, yet they will not charge the amount professionals will. This will be great for both parties. The client will be probably very pleased and the college student will be glad to put something in a portfolio to share to potential job offers.

  • @boxcarmarketing

Depending on how fancy or simple you want it, blogs will vary.  For my company website, we spent some time and money hiring a web developer and buying themes.  However, I also run a separate blog that uses little to no money.  If you start a blog on wordpress, blogger, blogspot, tumblr, and so on, it can be cheap if you are willing to have it simple.  Obviously, if you want the domain name or a better theme, it is going to get more expensive.  Yet, it still going to be cheap.

  • @boxcarmarketing @kristi-hines @glengorham  I was about to ask, “What? Are you crazy?” To me $500 seems absolutely outrageous to set up a blog. And 30K+ is beyond my comprehension! But then I realized how lucky I am. My best friend is a graphic designer. She did my company logo, my website and blog graphics and my book cover all for free. I have no idea how much she normally charges for all the work she’s done for me, but my guess is several thousand dollars. I’m not writing this to do anything more than to acknowledge her work and say thank you.

@mikid15  I like the idea of hiring a college student.

  • Send them my way Monique. I’ve been building Wordpress sites for small business for some time now right in that price range and it’s been an nice addition to my business. There are a lot of small businesses out there that need websites they can manage themselves and can’t afford the price of a large design agency.

The biggest expense is in the content. If they know what they want to put on the page, than it doesn’t take all that much to get them going. If they need copy writing and graphics that’s where the expense can come in.

With small businesses I set them up, provide a nice design, provide a little training and they are off and running. The great thing about Wordpress, with a little bit of code up your sleeve, a site can look very professional right out of the box, is easily optimized for SEO and can be managed by the end user.

  • @boxcarmarketing I agree with Kristi as well that your client can get a lot for $500. Like Jim, I offer many services that are easily covered by the $500 budget, which includes the graphic design (banner, background and any “button” or badges). I have also written two books on blogging, the latest, Creative Blogging, which covers how to setup a blog for Blogger, TypePad and WordPress.com, starting from scratch (from thinking about an idea to blog about, to purchasing and setting up a domain, to setting up a store page with paypal buttons, to integration with Facebook and Twitter, SEO and visitor tracking, and more). Each exercise is done step by step for Blogger, TypePad and WordPress.com.  So if your client is a reader and likes to learn step by step, then they’ll save lots of money that way and just have to pay for a graphic designer.

And there is sooooo much help available – paid and free and many free tutorials and help you can find on the web and in forums.

Many offer different services that include simply setting up the blog and adding gadgets to doing that plus graphic design, mapping a domain, setting up Google Analytics and other visitor tracking types of tools, as well as SEO tools and services.   But I still believe that it can all be done within or around the $500 budget.

    Happy Blogging!Heather :D

  • Wow I’m late to the party. Say @boxcarmarketing, I’ll add my name to the list also. If your just looking to get it set up and launched, there are many places to get this done for this rate. We too use templates to install blogs with the basics.
In fact if you have clients that are churches, Missionaries, or Christian NGO’s we will go a lot further for the $499 and include the full monty. This is our ministry.

  • @djkyle @jasonwiser Thanks for the introductions!

  • @boxcarmarketing If you want no traffic, then have a college kid build your blog/website. One of the wonderful things about WordPress is that you can build the keywords into the data base of the site. Which college kids don’t have a clue about, a lot of web designers don’t even know to build the keywords into the site. It takes a good developer to add in the keywords.

Get a good developer, there are many on this site, have them configure the site and you add the content, once you have a strong keyword list. And viola you have a great site on the cheap.

  • As I always tell my clients “use your words”  when writing a page about widgets don’t just show a picture of a widget and say we  build that!  the search engines have no idea what “That” is  however if you name your page Widget and alt tag your widget then describe your widget in glorious descriptive words in a natural way your site will begin to rank with good search results.
This process takes time you can’t create a page in just 5 min.  It can take some time to do it the right way.
    Example:
I manage a local job posting site and my client thought he could just send over a job description and I could create a page about the job opening (and most would do just that)  on the other hand I created a page just for the job posting then created a listing for that job posting under a page titled by category (let’s say warehouse supervisor) then made sure to create a link on the category page with link by title and city (again let’s say warehouse supervisor job in Bakersfield) to the job description.
This is just the beginning of the SEO process, There is the meta title, meta description,  Image alt tag, url, original content.  This is what you need to do or pay someone who understands this is as important as the posting.

Anyway sorry to rant on and on but you can see and good content is more that just a few words!
