SEO or Social Media or Both? (21 posts)

  • We all notice how much social media is starting to over take the world and consume our lives in fun way of course, but I am starting see less and less point of SEO. A Friend of mine has site with no SEO, they just use social media channels and they are getting traffic that I only dream about.

So to the question, would you suggest that we use more Social media and less seo or carry on using full house seo?

  • A combination of both is the best option.

Google looks for social signals too so your social media efforts also have a relevance on your SEO.

  • @camwilkes @gusvdw45  Probably a good balance in approach is best.

  • SEO is/will be very important, not only on quantitative terms but also on qualitative grounds. Generally speaking , traffic from search engines converts better than any kind of traffic.

Having said that, I would combine both sources. Moreover, after Penguin/Panda updates Google’s algorithm takes into account  the so-called “social signals” to improve your Serps. I’ve seen practical evidence of this.

  • I agree with the other guys here. SEO & Social Media should go hand-in-hand. It takes time for SEO efforts to show the results that you crave, but it’s possible to achieve. Keep working hard at both.

  • I’m as dense as wood about SEO (I’ve really been trying to learn SEO strategies recently, but it’s definitely a work in progress), but I’ve had a lot of success with traffic to my blog, Getajobtips.com, by teasing my blog posts on job-related LinkedIn discussion groups. The groups are free to join and free to post in and they drive a ton of traffic to your site, if you pique the interest of the readers with your topic.

  • We do Digital Mix for our customers, Digital MIX is new SEO, there is no doubt …

There are different group of customers:

    • Group #1: People who are in need and searching for it (SEO, PPC, Branding, Ask a friend, Directories and Marketplace, EDU)
    • Group #2: People who need but are not searching for it  (Social Media, Ads on FB/Websites interrupt type, Email Marketing etc)
    • Group #3: People who will not buy from you in next 6 to 12 months (Get them in as marketing people)

Now every business have different % of target customers in Group #1 and group #2, whether its B2B or B2C …

SEO may not work for many, Social May not work for many …. it all depends on customers in Group 1 or 2 …  Try http://www.slideshare.net/ajinimc/iimc-talk-on-digital-marketing-by-aji-issac-ceo-techshucom to learn more ..

  • @aji-mathew  is this like a plug for your web page?

  • no no, this is PPT that I created to show different mix for different phases for business.

We always come to right mix based on understanding what % of customers are in group #1 and group #2. For a T-Shirt company, most of the customers are in group 2 (in India esp), so going for social ads have worked great for us (better than Search Engine Ads).

Adding the mentions to add value, thats it. Hope it helps.

  • Thank you very much for the replies all! Greatly appreciate the insight! Will put more of a balance into my efforts!

    Thanks again!

  • What I am seeing work best now is great on-page SEO, quality content and social sharing.

  • I’ve just relaunched my blog about 2 weeks ago. I’ve been focusing on driving traffic w/o the use of seo.

I drive traffic through blogging and community based sites and leveraging the influence of others.

Here’s my four main traffic points:

    • Blog commenting (High traffic sites in my niche)
    • Content aggregators (BizSugar.com and Scoop.it)
    • Social media (Facebook/Twitter) and
    • Forums (Warrior Forum, SME)

These are working fantastic for me so far and my results are pretty good.

Here’s the results I’ve gotten so far:

    • 1,325 New Unique Visitors
    • 159 Facebook Likes
    • 41 Facebook Shares
    • 12 Google+’s
    • 89 BizSugar Votes
    • 24 New subscribers
    • 3 New Relationships with Influencers
    • 9 Natural Blog Backlinks

This is only from 6 posts on my blog.

I’ve just begun to release weekly traffic case studies the first of which I’ve just released yesterday: [Weekly Case Study] How I Got 1,325 Unique Visitors, 159 Facebook Likes, 70 Retweets, 89 Sugars??

The amount of traffic I’ve gotten to that post today has actually been pretty staggering to me.

Thanks to social media and some blogging heavy hitters sharing my post with their networks.

It’s amazing and exciting to see how viral and fast free traffic can be when done properly.

  • @michaelpingree

    Don’t forget quality backlinks

  • @albertmora  Quality content and social sharing provide plenty of quality backlinks.

  • @ti-roberts You’ve gotten an amazing amount of traffic. Congratulations! Are you converting any of your traffic to sales?

  • @amyhallbiz Thanks a lot Amy.  My traffic has yet to convert to sales.  That’s the code I’m trying to crack now.  Now that I have the traffic formula down I’m working on my sales funnel processes. I’m currently promoting a traffic related affiliate program. I’m in the process of putting together a bonus or two to incentivize sales.

  • I know what you mean Gus. Social media is creating waves in the online world & several businesses are dancing all the way to the bank becoz of it. SEO caters to search engine users looking for specific info and we really can’t afford to neglect those tho. Some SM platforms does this too plus its more fun. Nevertheless serious searches are done mainly through search engines and there are still millions of persons doing that daily. So I’d dare say the best thing would be is know who you are catering to. Know your audience and use the best platform to talk to them – SEO or SM. But balancing them both is the best bet in my view.

  • Short answer: Both.

    Long answer:

SEO isn’t what it used to be. It used to consist of some serious link building and keyword stuffing – this had great results. Now you will get penalised for using these practices (rightfully so). Instead you have to create fresh content that get’s ‘voted up’ by peers. Voting up occurs from social shares, leaving comments and other relevant sources linking to you.

Therefore a good online strategy consists of creating content optimised primarily for your customer, and secondly for search engines, then promoting that content with social networks and building a community to get repeat visits.

As a side note to this, traffic from search engines are meant to have a higher conversion rate, this is because they are looking for something specific, instead of being in the mindset of socialising with their friends.

  • Both would be great and beneficial.. social media sometime powerful for getting lots of traffic but SEO can help you get good ranks in search engine :)

  • Situations are constantly changing and what is working this week may be slightly altered next week. I follow the trends and try to stay one step ahead of the curve.

In other words it’s best to anticipate verse react.. Use what you need to in order to get results as long as you stay within the established frame work. Use both when you need to while playing it by ear.
