Seasonal Blog Topics (8 posts)

  • Here’s a question for everyone…

Do your blog topics tend to reflect the seasons/holidays and if so do you see your traffic increase because of that?

One of my favorite things to do is check out http://www.google.com/insights/search/ and look at rising topics and blog on them :)

  • @joancrocker Nice tips!  I think the one holiday related boom I have seen is from Google image search.  I put up a photo in a post from 2009 and named it Happy Holidays – the filename, the alt tag, and the title tag all said Happy Holidays.  In 2010, I had the highest traffic my site has ever seen on December 23 – 25th because that photo ranked #1 in Google image search for Happy Holidays.  I didn’t know until after the holidays, so I still kick myself for not knowing and finding a way to optimize that post better (because it was so random).

  • Hi Joan and Kristi! Many of my customers are in the paper crafting field, so they do something called “Countdown to Christmas” or “12 Weeks of Christmas” where they focus on that holiday season and delivering holiday content for that duration of time.  I was a guest designer for one of them this year, http://www.HandStampedByHeather.com where you can see what I mean.  Each week for 10 weeks, we posted our designs on Fridays.  Visitors could see our creations on our blogs, however they had to join the newsletter (free) in order to receive the PDF tutorial on how to make the cards, boxes, projects we did over the 10 weeks.

It was very successful in building traffic as we had a design team and linked to each other’s blogs. We also had “blog candy” (offering a prize) so it encouraged people to leave comments as well. But more so, it built our list of newsletter subscribers.

So depending on your field or audience, this type of seasonal countdown may work for you. For a photographer, it could be the best photos of 2011 for a certain amount of weeks. For a retailer, their top 10 picks for the holidays, etc.

    Hope this helps,Heather :D

  • Great ideas!  Since most of  my clients are B2B, we all like to start a New Year off with Goals for the New Year or new strategies industry-specific - then there is usually Back to School and Goal Setting for the 2nd half of the year are popular (what is working and how to fix what is not  and in the Holiday week, we often Reflect on success stories that we share on our blogs or tips that are industry related – so those would be the 3 times of year that are seasonally related for a lot of B2B.

  • @joancrocker Good question.

For a few of the places I write for I’ve done predictions (trends) posts for 2012 where I’ve reached out to influencers in those industries. They’re fun posts to curate and the feedback on them has been very good. I’ve also done best posts of 2011 and these are a really good way too to bring back a series of posts that had been successful at another time in the year.

    Happy holidays!

  • Here`s an interesting post by Ros Gardner where she shows all the holiday dates for next year – which are great blog posts!

Ready to start some advance planning for your affiliate promotions in 2012?

  • Joan,

Google Search trends – so glad you brought this up.I’ve only recently become aware of bloggers using it. (Sad since I’ve been blogging quite a while.)

I’m wondering if anyone has found a good tutorial on using Google Search trends.

  • Wow, that just opened up a lot of possibilities!  Great tip Joan!  I’m used to looking for trending topics on social, but never thought about the great Google itself!
