Scheduling Blogging time? (7 posts)

  • Do you build a certain time into your day or week to work on and post a blog item?

  • I set out scheduling time. I just wound up staring at screen. I would love to hear what others do in hopes to make it work for me.

  • I write for my business a minimum of one hour per day.

The time of day varies depending on what’s on my calendar as far as client time, networking, special projects, training, etc.

Similar to what I think Glen is saying, if I try to pre-schedule that hour out every day I end up staring at the screen — it doesn’t work for me because it feels too constricting. So the hour is spent whenever it fits in and is usually broken up into two 30 minute blocks — I’ve found that’s an ideal amount of uninterrupted time for me to get some good writing done.

For blog posting, the schedule goes like this:

Post for the week is emailed to VA on Monday at 5pm.

    Post goes live on Wednesday.

    Repeat.

I just started with this schedule and anticipate that the posts will build up over time so that I have some in reserve — which will mean I can increase frequency to twice a week and/or have a nice cushion for when I take time off. Or both.

    Cheers,
    Stef

  • I agree, I don’t have a set time, but try to find writing time at different times in my everyday. Twenty minutes here, an hour there, fifteen minutes here… as much as I can. This way I don’t loose momentum, stay focused and meet my many deadlines.

I also find that the use of an editorial calendar is really helpful. For example, I release two white papers a month on social media crises, and I have right up to April scheduled out with ideas and themes/topics for each White Paper. I find that, if I write down ideas and schedule their release week ahead of time, it saves me from a week of “I don’t know what to write, nothing is inspiring me”…

    Hope this helped!

  • @trudy I write when I’m in the mood – sometimes that’s in the morning, other times it’s late in the evening.  I find that if I try to force myself to write when I’m not ready, it doesn’t lead to productive results.

  • @trudy
You can also set aside a Saturday or Sunday time to write up a bunch of posts and then “schedule” them to be published during the week or month (depending on how often you publish to your blog).  I know a few people who do this and it works for them :D Just another idea :D

  • @glengorham @stefaniefrank @melissaagnes @kristi-hines @blogsbyheather,Thanks to all of you for sharing.  These are all great ideas. Some I have tried, some not, Those I tried I confess I was not consistent enough for them to become a habit.  I have started going to the blog and creating a few drafts on various topics to go back to later. Which I have not yet done.  Your suggestions give me hope and a shot in the arm to get more structured.
