Resources for CopyWriters vs. Article Writers (9 posts)

  • Wasn’t sure what to title this Forum, but since I’ve been getting lots of questions lately about copywriting vs. article writing, AND the Blogging Club is where most die-hard writers are hanging out here on SME, I thought it best to avail this resource here in the Blogging Club.

Copywriters write advertising and marketing messages. VERY, very different from article writing, news writing, PR writing… fact-based writing. It’s both an art and a science, and you could fill a library with books on the psychology of it.

But just want to warn you up front… put your blinders on here, lest you be whisked away to the land of endless shiny magical objects. With over 7,000 threads devoted to nothing but copywriting, you are SURE to get lost here if you visit without specific purpose. Also, keep your wallet far away from your computer when you visit. To me, it’s like going into the grocery store when you’re really hungry. Big mistake! You’re bound to buy twice as much as you need and end up with too many sweets and munchie food. Same goes here…

Since almost every product you could buy is now either obtainable or marketed online, you’ll want to go where the best (or at least the most) copywriters for those products hang out the most:

    http://www.warriorforum.com/copywriting-forum/

You’ll find directories, resources, definitions, hints, tips, templates, examples, courses, lots of freebies, and some pretty famous copywriters here… as well as many people who would lead you astray in a heartbeat. With half-million members, anything can happen… so like I said… stay focused, visit with a purpose, keep your blinders on, and your wallet in the other room.

    Enjoy!

Do you have a favorite copywriting site you like to resource?

  • I’m partial to the following:

    http://www.seocopywriting.com/
    http://copyhackers.com/
    http://www.copyblogger.com/blog/

  • Good Lord! You could get lost in the Warrior Maze! It will take some more poking around, but it looks like there could be some interesting and good stuff in there. And I checked out a couple of threads that were absolutely cringe-worthy. One poor guy asked for honest feedback on something and boy did they give it to him!

As far as places I like to go, I’m partial to copyblogger as well. I also like The Belligerent Copywriter (http://www.copywritingtipsguide.com/).

    Thanks for the tip!

  • Great copywriting resources are one thing I just can’t get enough of.  : )
Totally agree with @juleswebb above, two of my absolute faves are also copyblogger and copyhackers.  (I just discovered copyhackers a few days ago and immediately fell in love with it.)

    2 other favorites are:
    http://harrisonamy.com/blog/

    http://menwithpens.ca/blog/

  • @kimberlyhouston thanks for the links, they look not just informative, but fun!

  • @atlantarobin I going to have to agree with  @juleswebb here http://www.copyblogger.com/blog/ is one i am also partial too. They have two excellent short courses , I high recommend that are free:

    1. Copywriting 101: How to Craft Compelling Copy
    2. Content Marketing: How to Build an Audience that Builds Your Business
I also love the style of writing that Social Triggers (Derek Halpern)  and  Boost Blog Traffic  (Jon Morrow) produce.

  • @geoffrey-gordon I really like Derek Halpern. Hadn’t heard of Jon Morrow’s blog, but I’m checking it out now ;)

  • Oh, these are ALL great links, but somehow “Men with pens” slipped past my eye somehow! Yes, there ARE some fun sites listed here. And I agree about Copyblogger — a definite must-read. Derek Halpern, big thumbs up (doesn’t his son hang out @ the WF) or am I thinking of the son of another famous copywriting icon?

    Robin @juleswebb @geoffrey-gordon @kimberlyhouston @atediting

P.S. Amy, see what I mean? Open your mouth with one idea around here and all these wonderful brainstormers quickly rush in to offer links and suggestions that make everything even mo-better! Thanks, you guys!  My social media heroes — all of you!  :)

  • http://www.socialmouths.com – not constrained by content marketing, but there a lot of good information out there!
