Old blog needs a new look. (5 posts)

  • Happy Sunday Folks.

If you’ve seen me around these SME clubs you know I am no Wordpress guru, far from it.  I really need help finding a theme that has all the same widgets that I am now using on a particular blog. Currently using “Spectrum” and want to update that look with something that looks smarter/updated.

Can someone tell me how to know what widgets are offered without looking through all the lists of themes? You know, like a table that lists those so I can compare?

    Thanks!

  • @supereb Hi Eileen. I’m no Wordpress guru either, but I like the platform because for most of what I’m currently doing, I don’t have to be an expert!

Anyhow, here is one link that provides a clickable list of the widgets I know of.  If it doesn’t give you all the info you need, I hope it leads you to the next step!

    So here goes: http://en.support.wordpress.com/category/widgets-sidebars/

BTW, I use the free WP — the paid version might have a different list of widgets.

    Good hunting!

  • Hi @rachelagheyisi —

Aahhh, nice list – I bookmarked that one.  Not exactly what I was looking for but very informative and useful anyhowsen.  Thanks.

  • Most widgets work independent of the theme… So it really shouldn’t matter what theme you change too, the widgets should stay in place.

  • Hey @supereb,
I’m a WordPress dev so might be able to help you :)

Pretty much all themes come with pre-defined widget areas, e.g. a sidebar. When you switch between themes, you might have to put the widgets back in, however they will still be available.

You should also be aware that if you switch to a new theme, then revert back, your old widget settings will remain, so don’t be afraid to install a few themes and have a play around.

Here’s a few places you can get themes:
    http://www.themeforest.net <- free & premium
    http://www.woothemes.com <- free & premium
    http://www.studiopress.com <- premium & genesis framework
