Need help adding a download as a free gift to my Aweber web form (14 posts)

  • Hi, my name is Gabrielle Holmefjord, and I’m pretty new to blogging.

I have a Pdf file to give away as a free gift when people sign up for my newsletter, but I don’t know how to link the Pdf file to the web form. Aweber suggest creating a new page for the download and linking to the page, but I don’t know how to do this.

Is it something I can do myself, or do I need a web designer to do it for me?

If I need a web designer, does someone know how much work is involved and how much it may cost?

    Thanking you!

    Best wishes, Gabrielle:)

  • Hi Gabrielle,

I’ve never used Aweber. Can you just send the gift to them via email after they sign up?

  • Hi Jack, thanks for your reply. I guess I could, although I imagine it will be a bit of work when I (hopefully) have lots of people on my list.

Do you have a giveaway, Jack? If you do, how do you do it?

    Gabrielle:)

  • I’m all about finding the cheap way to do things. How I make documents available on my blog is that added a free Box.net account to my LinkedIn profile (you can access Box.net through the LinkedIn More tab > Applications (or Get More Applications if you already have applications). It allows you to have accessible documents on your LinkedIn profile and it also can provide you with a web link for your documents so all that you have to do is copy the web link into your blog or make it a hyperlink.

When people click on the link, they are routed to Box.net where they are asked if they want to download the document. That adds a step for the reader, but people don’t seem to mind. To increase the chances that people open it, let them know to click download when they get to the Box.net. page

Even if you don’t have a LinkedIn account. I think that you can create a Box.net account for this purpose.

If you are unsure what I mean about Box.net, feel free to invite me to connect on LinkedIn (I am the Kathy Bernard in St. Louis, Mo.) I will accept and then you scroll down on my profile to see my Box.net section. Or, check out the Printable Resources page of my blog, Getajobtips.com, to see all of the documents I have made avaialble through Box.net … I still haven’t paid a dime for the service.

  • @gabrielle-holmefjord You don’t need to hire a web designer to do this, creating a new page for the download should be pretty simple if you’re blogging on Wordpress.  I haven’t actually done this yet on my Wordpress blog, but I’ve done plenty of research on how to do it since I’m getting ready to do precisely the same thing you are with a PDF download once someone signs up for my email list.  (There used to be a Wordpress plug-in for this, you might want to check on that as well.)

Also, I’ve found the folks at Aweber to be super helpful when I have any kind of question that involves getting Aweber to function with other things I’m doing – I just call them up and ask them how to do it and they tell me.  For example, before it was so easy to install an Aweber opt-in form on a Facebook page, back in the dark ages of the Internet, I called Aweber and they stayed on the phone with me and walked me through the entire process. Though I bet there are at least a few Wordpress experts here in the SME forums that can tell you (and me!) how it’s done.  : )

    Good luck!

  • Hi Kathy, thanks for your suggestions!! I’ve just sent you a friend invitation on LinkedIn, and I had a look at your Box app. It’s a great idea. My only question is whether it’s possible to hide files on Box.net, because if I offer a Pdf file as a gift for signing up for my newsletter, it’s not a good thing if the Pdf is visible on my LinkedIn page.

Is it possible to ‘hide’ files on Box.com?

    Warm wishes, Gabrielle :)

  • Hi Kimberly. thanks too for your reply:)

I am blogging on WP – a web designer from Elance wanted $70 for creating a new page for me. I thought it was a bit much!!!

I’ve asked Aweber support twice how to create a new page for the download, but both the people I asked said they didn’t know how to do it – that this was outside their expertise, and that I should ask my hosting company. I use GoDaddy, but when I rang them to ask how to create a page for the download, they said they didn’t offer that kind of service, and that I should ask WordPress.

After all this, I’m hoping someone here will be able to help. I like Kathy’s idea of using Box.com, as long as it’s possible to hide the file.

If you learn more about how to do this, Kimberly, I’d love to know too :) I’ll let you know, too, if I learn more :)

    Warm wishes, Gabrielle :)

  • @gabrielle-holmefjord Here’s blog post I found helpful — it lays out the process of sending an ebook to email subscribers.  It covers how to integrate the process with Aweber as well — uploading the ebook to a download page, creating (and hiding) the download page in Wordpress, and inegrating the process with Aweber.

    http://www.blogtyrant.com/how-to-automatically-send-an-ebook-to-your-email-subscribers/

And there is also the Exclude Pages plugin in Wordpress you can use to hide the page.

I’m looking forward to you figuring this all out so that when I’m ready to do the same thing soon, you’ll be the expert who can tell me how!  ; )

  • Oh, and here’s the missing “t” from the word “integrating,” above.  ; )

  • Dear Kimberly, thanks so much for your emails, and for the link :)

I’m so sorry for not replying before now, but I haven’t been back here since I wrote to you last. My son was married, and I’ve been working a lot on my book. Once I send the manuscript off for proofreading at the end of this week, I’ll set to work on my blog, and I’ll definitely check out the link that you sent me.

I hope I can master this, and then help you when you’re ready :)

    Thanks again, Kimberly :)

    Warm wishesfrom Gabrielle :)

  • @gabrielle-holmefjord  No worries — you’ve been super busy!  I”ll be finishing up my ebook offering to use as an email signup incentive by the end of September, so once that’s done, I’ll check in and see if you’ve mastered the process with your own ebook/Aweber sign up.  Then you can teach me how it’s done.  ; )

    Best,

    Kimberly

  • @kimberlyhouston, Thanks for posting this link!  I just listened to it and I think I’ll be able to follow the instructions without calling in an expert!  These things are basically very logical but you have to have a foundation of knowledge about your wordpress blog and creating pages in order to do it correctly.  If someone is not familiar with the architecture of their WP blog, the AWEBER part may be the easiest part!  Anyway, thanks for posting it.

  • @kimberlyhouston, Hi Kimberly, I was wondring how you’re going with your ebook giveaway? Have you finished it?

I’ve only just done mine. When I wanted to download the Pdf file on WP I followed the video clip that you sent me. It helped, but it didn’t show me everything I needed to know. But I found this link, and between this one and the one you sent me, I was able to do it:)

Thanks so much for your help, Kimberly!! If you need help with your free download, just let me know :)

    Have a lovely day:)

    Warm wishes, Gabrielle:)

  •  @gabrielle-holmefjord  Hi Gabrielle, that’s awesome you got your ebook done, woohoo!  : )

I haven’t finished mine yet, due to circumstances beyond my control.  : )

Actually, I finished writing it, and was in the process of polishing it up and editing it so I could add it to my blog as and email sign up incentive, but my laptop died just as I was putting the final edits on it.  Completely crashed and can’t be repaired.  So my ebook and everything else is tied up in a dead laptop.  I can still get all my documents off my hard drive — for a price — but that’s on hold while I get caught up on a bunch of client work I got behind on when I lost computer access for those 4-5 days.

But I’ll definitely visit this link you provided right now and see what I can learn — I think I have the process nailed down, but there are a couple of details I’m not completely clear on.  Thanks so much for the message, and the link, and so glad you got the process figured out!
