My Domain is Stolen, be careful.. Crackers do exist! (11 posts)

  • Hi all,

I am sorry if I am writing this post in a bad mode, really bad thing happened to me yesterday and just want to breath with you!

In short, someone stolen two of my best domain names, and business big assets that I depend on them for living:

    - FamousBloggers.net- ThesisAwesome.com

That guy (cracker, that’s what they call them) who stolen my domains emailed me after he hacked my GoDaddy account and offered selling me the domains for $999, I thought it was a spam, because I didn’t get any email notification about domain transfer from GoDaddy, and I check my account, and I was shocked by the fact that those two domain names no longer exists in it, and they have been transferred away from my ownership.

I called GoDaddy, and now they working with the other company where the domains were transferred, but since yesterday I am having the worst feeling ever!

    So, now.. I am blogless!

And, I am not sure when this nightmare will end, from what see it could take from 7 days to a few months to get my domains back, and maybe I won’t get them back for ever!

I took some other steps, and I had to take it to the public on my personal blog to let everyone know what’s going on with my sites and how GoDaddy responds, so I am posting the events here:

    http://zebida.com/main/domains-stolen/

I wanted to spread the word as much as I can to aware everybody to protect themselves and learn from this bad experience I am suffering from.

So, be careful, crackers do exist!

  • @hesham I am so sorry! What horrible news!

CSS Tricks had a similar experience a year ago. His articles might provide some insights or helpful suggestions, or at least give you some hope.

    This Site’s Domain is Stolen
This Site’s Domain is Now Safe

Please keep us updated with the progress you make.  I am envisioning success with some fantastic blog posts as a result of this “not so fun” experience.
    Fingers crossed,
    Jules

  • That’s never happened to me, but that must be so traumatic for you! So sorry… and sending good thoughts… and prayers… your way… that things will work out Ok.

I know I’ve had weird GoDaddy problems… kind, sorta… as it’s really all the domain companies do weird things sometimes.

My biggest pet peeve is when I’m searching domain names for availability, and do this in mass numbers, thinking I’ll come back and buy what I want when I have time… ALL the names I’ve input that were available will show NOT available or on backorder or some other weird thing… but not available to me.

I got the funny feeling that something was weird about this and started inputting names like Wisteriahotdogwithpecandentalpanic.com and lo and behold, several hours later it said the name was taken! On backorder… or some ridiculous nonavailable status. Checked the next day, same thing. Input this same name on GoDaddy, 1and1, and another one… and they all reported the same thing.

Several days later, all but GoDaddy had released the names I input, but anything I put into GoDaddy became unavailable to me.

I then spenet half an hour trying to fill in the forms to report this to the FTC as an unfair competitive ploy, but lol, the dang form ATE my complaint and I haven’t had time to waste on another one since.

Hope you get your names back… and please do come back here and report what’s happening.

  • Remembered another example…

Last week, a friend was buying his name (like JohnDoe.net) and GoDaddy informed him that JohnDoe.com had expired in April and should be available within 45 days or so. He said… well it’s been more than 45 days if that was in April. The girl said… you’re right. Look for it online within the next few days or weeks, so you can pick it up then, if you don’t want to backorder it. (It’s cheaper to just wait).

So my friend types in JohnDoe.com a week later and yes, it’s available. He was in the car, so couldn’t pay right then. Pulled over, whipped out his credit card, pulls up JohnDoe.com to order, and the name is now unavailable to him!

There very little competition in this world for his name, maybe a handful of people… five or less… but suddenly his name is taken within those few minutes.

This week he starts getting emails from someone who wants to sell him that name. How did they get his email address? It has part of his name, but has another word with it. Did Godaddy give this person his email? Is someone out there buying up exact name domains and then somehow getting emails of people with that name and trying to sell them their own name?

    What’s going on with that?

  • @juleswebb , Hi Jules, I read Chris’s post and glad they could solve it in a week! But didn’t read the second link, I will read it now. (many thanks)

I just got off phone with GoDaddy now and they explained to me what I understood is one word… “wait”

They have to negotiate with Active Registrar, Inc. to see if they will cooperate and transfer the domains back, but no one is sure about how long it could take, also no one can tell that they are sure I’ll get it back!

I appreciate your support, it’s really good to have a place where you can be heard.

  • @atlantarobin Hi Robin, thank you so much for taking the time to reply.
Yes, GoDaddy is full of tricks, that’s why I search for domains mostly on domain.com , then buy them from my GoDaddy account, however I had a lot of problems with them, so I host my sites away, I just didn’t learn the lesson, I should’ve moved all my furniture long time ago!
And, WOW.. you second story is really interesting!
Sure, I will keep you updated.

  • @hesham I read your post last night and this is terrible! Last week I had someone hack into just about all of my main services (Amazon, Apple, Ebay, Paypal, and a few others). Not sure how or why, but fortunately each caught on that something was up and locked my accounts. I remember thinking “Ah, what could they do if they got into Godaddy anyway” but now I know. I hope they get this situation fixed for you ASAP. Too bad you can’t sue the cracker while your at it for all the harm he’s caused your business – he deserves it!

  • @hesham Especially since you can get his info…

You can find a LinkedIn and Twitter profile for someone with the same name too – not sure if they are the same person though.

  • @kristi-hines oh dear, glad you wasn’t hurt!

I’ve learned so many things since yesterday, time for a big password changes and pay attention to small details we just don’t think of!

Yes, I spent the whole night search, reading and imagining, now my eyes are red! He can be anyone, anywhere..

  • wild, I never heard of that. something new every day

  • @richardmclaughlin  Same here Mac, I was really shocked, then I discovered it’s common thing, and it actually happens a lot!
    Stay safe!
