Move my WP blog to company website or new domain? (7 posts)

Topic tags: Blog, domains, Wordpress
  • I run Conquer Publishing and have a separate personal blog about self-publishing on WP. I want to move my blog off of WP.com so I can have access to plugins. Would you suggest getting a separate domain or should I just add it to the company site? Conquer, as a company, is not currently blogging. I’ve been trying to market through the personal blog. (Also, does anyone know if it’s possible to run two blogs from the same domain? Just curious.)

  • Hi Mark,

Running 2 blogs from the same domain – I don’t think that this would be a problem at all. Just install the 2nd into a separate directory. I often run client’s sites with both Joomla and WordPress installed on the same domain. Joomla is in the site’s root directory and WP is in a different directory. Just backup your original site first before installing WP though. Just in case you run into any problems. :) Good luck!

  • @markoetjens Yes, you can have more than one WordPress installation / blog on one domain by installing it in different folders.  For your situation, you could go about it three ways…

    1. Install WordPress in a folder for your personal blog on domain.com/yournameblog/, then later install WordPress for the main company blog on domain.com/blog/.

    2. Install WordPress in a folder under domain.com/blog/, then create a category for your personal blog entries.  Later, when the company starts its main blog, create additional categories corresponding to the topics that the company blogs about.

    3. Install WordPress on your own domain for your blog, then later install WordPress in a folder under domain.com/blog/.

I’ve seen where the president of the company has their own blog separate from the company before – it just depends how you want to brand it – as your own, as or as a part of your company.  Just think about whether the content you will write on your personal blog is something you would want to continue to live on under your name and as a part of your own online property if you were to later sell your company.

Thanks for the advice. The whole “folders” thing is a little over my head. I just log in and update, create a new page if I have to. I’m a writer, not really a techie. The category idea sounds right up my alley. Thanks again.

  • @markoetjens Depending on who you host with, you should be able to see a folder structure of how your files are on your website server.  You can probably talk to your web developer / hosting company to find out more about creating a sub folder on your domain for your blog and WordPress.  :)

  • @markoetjens Yes it is not a big task to create sub directories into your domain, where you can run another site or install wp separately,

but most important of all you should backed up your all previous site before moving it to new domain in case you did any wrong thing, then you could have it back where your site was.

    Good Luck

    Mark.

    Thanks Kristi and Muhammad.
