Monetizing A Blog (8 posts)

  • I have a really basic question. I’ve been blogging for a year and have built a pretty good following in the last five months. I am ready to start offering things to collect data and to start paying for my last year’s investment in time.

Is there a step by step guide on how to create landing pages, use the data and begin to collect money.

I am sorry if this is a ridiculously elementary question . . . but it’s all new to me.

  • @judithgotwald No need to be sorry.  When you say start offering things, do you mean your own products for sale or affiliate marketing?

As far as landing pages, if you are using self-hosted WordPress, you can get a plugin called Premise that will help you create the landing pages.  It’s $97 - http://getpremise.com/

As far as collecting data, do you use Google Analytics?  Or do you mean collecting email addresses to build a list to sell to?

  • @kristi-hinesThanks for your response. I would like to follow the advice I have been learning from Mike Seltzner. I created my blog one year ago. I have an audience now and since I’ve been posting daily for six months, I have the structure of a book.

I’d like to publish my posts as a book and offer it to readers. I would also like to begin offering webinars, etc. and other resources from time to time. I’ve been offering things like that for free and they are getting a lot of downloads.

I guess I’m struggling with how to balance free and helpful with being fiscally responsible.

I have been using a free WP site but I read recently that you can upgrade them to use plugins. Am I right that this would be a first step?

  • @judithgotwald If you’re on WordPress.com and want full control / functionality of your website to be able to add plugins, Google Analytics, etc., then you’d have to purchase your own domain, get hosting, and install the WordPress software.  You can transfer your content from your WordPress.com site and let your current audience know that your site is moving.

  • @judithgotwald I highly recommend picking up a copy of Corporate Blogging for Dummies. It was co-written by a good friend of mine, Douglas Karr, along with Chantelle Flannery. Even as a professional blogger, I still got some great information out of it.

  • Hello Judith,

You can create wonderful and effective landing pages with Premise Landing page plugin for WordPress, and its developed by most popular blog Copyblogger. So you can imaging how effective it would be.

But all this would only work if you are on self hosted WordPress blog..

  • Gets yourself a domain name ASAP! Will open up a new world of possibilities that you control… If you do thru godaddy can do hosting cheap, too… Get control of your collateral before you monetize!

  • Yes, definitely get your own domain. I cringe when I see blogs on blogspot or wordpress.com. Secondly, collect your readers email addresses with an opt-in form. That is the goldmine that will get people back to your blog and look at any product you may produce later on.
