Monetizing a blog with WordPress (3 posts)

  • I’ve recently started drafting a plan to start my own blog, and even though it’s very (very) early in the planning process, I wanted to get a better understanding of setting up a monetizing plan with banner ads.

When I say very early planning stages, I mean we’re still drafting the name, buying a domain, and setting up design concepts. We’re nowhere near actually drafting content for the blog. I am however, writing the plan for Phase III, which won’t happen for at least a year or so, assuming we have enough site traffic by that time to corroborate our advertising offerings.

My question is this: Does WordPress support a plug-in for running banner ads? I’m assuming Google Analytics would be the best option for tracking impressions, clicks, etc.

Would someone be able to provide any personal insight, or a tutorial they can rely on? Anything would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks!

  • @luftherz There’s actually a few plugins that you can use. The latest one I’ve heard about is CrankyAds (http://www.crankyads.com/) and there is also OIOpublisher (http://www.oiopublisher.com/). I *think* those track clicks, but I’m not sure. You could use Google Analytics to track clicks, but really that should be more on the advertisers side than yours. Personally I just sell banner space based on a flat monthly fee, but if you do CPC ads, then you’ll definitely want to have a program that can track clicks. Banner ads aren’t my main income so that’s probably why I’m not big about tracking them.

  • @luftherz I think this topic is going to be helpful to many people, I am glad you started it, hopefully a lot of good ideas appear. You could have a look at ‘BudURL’ to see if they offer what you require re tracking.
