  • how many of you use a lot of links in posts? I like to use them so people can reference what I am talking about if they are unfamiliar, but I try to keep it down to not be distracting. Do you all try to keep links to a small percentage of your text?

I think I would like to keep it to less than five links per article, or do you just use the “in text links” tool in your blog platform of choice?

  • Hi Glen,

I try to keep the links down to a minimum as to not distract too much. There is a fine line because although we do not want to add too many links we want people to have the information. I try to keep it to about three links, if I can.

If I need to add more links I will add a reference section at the bottom for those who want to research more.

  • @glengorham I usually try to keep links down, but some sites I write for actually want a lot of links – either internal links or links to any products / sites mentioned.  I’d rather have a link where it was needed as opposed to links missing.  Someone posted a great list of 100 resources for Twitter – great except for the fact they didn’t link to one of the tools they mentioned so you either had to search for them all yourself or just leave frustrated.

  • @glengorham I don’t have any hard and fast rules about links to use. I’m a big believer though of crediting everyone whose content has been a source for the research I’ve done and so in some cases, the links might add up.

And as @kristi-hines said I’m frustrated when people present a list and don’t provide the link. I think we should make things as easy as we can for readers. (and of course, just be sure to have the link open in a new window so the person doesn’t end up leaving your site).

  • im a big believer in anchor text links (links to other articles on your blog / website).

external links, generally not so much.  if there is a need to however, especially if theres alot i would keep them to the end of the article.  that way, people dont read your article and click away half way thru as youve stuck an external link in it  :)

  • In addition to what’s been said and in agreement :D I use links where relevant (always give credit where credit is due) and of course you interlinks (linking back to articles on my own blog) where relevant.

At times at the bottom of my posts, I added a Related Articles section where I will list them and link to them (in a numbered or bulleted list).  So that’s one way I occasionally use more links than usual.

    Heather :D

  • @debby @kristi-hines @debbie-hemley @dextereugenio @blogsbyheather thank you for the input. I will definitely bear this in mind. I don’t want to with-hold info from people but on the flip side I don’t necessarily want to ask them to leave my blog. Ya know? I will work on the right balance.

  • @glengorham It can be tough at times making the right call. I am right there with you! I have taken links out only to put them right back in. :)

  • @glengorham This shouldn’t be something to concern, the best way to do things is to actually be natural, link whenever you see a need to!

Anchor text links and adding titles to your links to both (external and internal) help search engines to know more about your content and rank it on the right spot, that’s why relevancy is the most important thing to look at, plus linking to authority sites of course.

But, one thing to pay attention too is to give your readers a good experience, so you don’t want to disturb them while reading with many links on the wrong place.

Personally, I like to do both external and internal links “a lot” because I think that post without links has no identity.

I also use useful and simple automated ways for internal linking such as “related posts”, and some other plugins and codes to help me add even more related links on sidebars in different ways.
