  • This is an interesting article about having a profitable blog.

I am curious how many of you are blogging and tracking your ROI. Are you doing it through paid ads or increased customer activity.

  • @kathyweir I would agree with the article, Kathy. Although, I also think a community is good as well. I don’t think it is an either-or.

It all comes down to your goals. But one thing to keep in mind is that a community is made up of real people. And those people know other people. So if you have a community of devoted fans, you have a built-in audience of people who may just buy your product.

You do need to sell though. That’s how you get others to buy what you are selling.

So, while having a community is fantastic, you do need to sell to it.

I think a lot of people (myself included) have trouble selling what they have. It doesn’t come easily, but it is something you have to learn how to do.

Also, just a side note, make sure that you know what your blog/site is about and think about how you are going to make money from it before you start it.

This way you will know what you need to do in order to make the money you want and also how you want to generate that money (via ads, downloadable content, offline activities, etc).

    Cheers!

  • @kathyweir Simply, blogging and its related activities like ads, affiliate marketing and even selling own products, it has a huge ROI.
I make a living from my online business, and blogging helped me to reach my goals in 2011, mmm.. not everyone likes to share number, but I really don’t mind.

    While I spent about $17,000, I’ve got a total income of $50,000+

Of course, this took me a lot of work, and I can say that the best part of my income comes from selling my own product, which is basically a design, and then affiliate commissions.

I think I succeeded with that because I do it as my full time job, so I have no other way but to succeed.

It’s really interesting to see how kind 2012 is.

  • @kathyweir It really depends on your business.  Mine is freelance writing for business blogs, so my blog is definitely making the ROI for my business and then some.

  • I also think its a matter of time as well. For example, my business is on setting up blogs and things related, however my blog writing is mostly “how to” articles on blogging.

So it is in this writing and building of a trusted source, etc. that then led customers to use my blog setup and design services.@kathyweir  @kristi-hines |

  • @kathyweir My blog is making money but I am starting the process for a complete redesign so there go my profits, for the time being anyway. I only make a few thousand a year on my blog but hopefully in time I’ll be able to create more revenue streams. I’ve started doing a little freelance writing and have been approached by brands wanting blog posts on my blog, so I guess that’s promising.

  • @russellallert  ”I think a lot of people (myself included) have trouble selling what they have. It doesn’t come easily, but it is something you have to learn how to do.”  This is so true.Knowing your target customer like your best friend before you start does go a very long way in setting the entire look/feel and content of your blog (or product/service).  Also…I think, tedious as they are to complete, a (modified) business plan would be incredibly helpful in reaching ROI goals on a blog.

Thanks for the nod, Daun. :)

  • These are all great comments. I thought the article was interesting. I have a client who is thinking of starting a blog and hearing your experiences are a great value. Thanks to all
