Is it too late to change Permalink settings (11 posts)

  • Well…I just found out that there are settings for my blog posts (I’m a newbee at blogging). And I have posted about 70 odd posts using the default setting.

Would you suggest to change the settings to custom structure? I want my posts to be easily found by google. Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Cheers Peta

  • Yes, this will change the URLs of your blog posts. If you have posted them elsewhere, then it will change their address, sort of like you moving to a new house and not telling anyone.

However, if you haven’t put them out there too much, and they haven’t been promoted that heavily, then go ahead and change them. Google will keep up without any problems.

It would definitely be worth doing, especially if the update will change the URL of your blog post to include the actual title, and not “p=1168″ or whatever identifier they use.

  • @petaminter12 – Ditto what Erik said. If you do change them, make sure you go change the links anywhere else where you linked to them. Hopefully that isn’t too many places! When/If you change the permalinks, consider this: I now leave the post number and add the post title to the end. That way, I can always point people to the post by number. You can also still link to that url either with or without the post title if you have both the post number and title in it. For example, if your post url is xxxx.com/p=168/teach-me-permalinks, you can give people the url xxxx.com/p=168 and it will still go to that post. It’s great if you want to use it in a status update without using a shortener, or just to give people a shorter address. I just learned this trick recently from a very well-known blogger/affiliate marketer.

    Hi Pita,

It’s definitely a good idea to get your permalinks changed asap.  I suggest using the post name permalink as your post name’s typically have keywords in them which is good for SEO.  It’s one of the options under common settings on the permalink page.

  • Thank you @erikdeckers @srsheldon @iamconculting I really appreciate your input and time. I’m glad I found this out sooner than later. I’ll get on to it straight away.

  • I went ahead and made the changes and found that wordpress automatically updates the changes to all posts even the my posts on google+.

  • @petaminter12 Just to add to all the advice and maybe a bit late, but I did have this problem and even after changing it correctly, StumbleUpon did not want to play ball.., which was a bummer.

    I followed this: http://yoast.com/articles/wordpress-seo/

  • Wow @rogiernoort great article thanks, I’ve been reading how so many people like the Yoast plug in, I think its time for me to get up to date.

  • @rogiernoort Great article! Joost is a WordPress God!!!

  • @amyhallbiz @petaminter12 I know.., he’s an all round good guy, very passionate. I’ll get him to do a review on on of my sites too one day (by the way, I’m not affiliated in anyway, unfortunately).

  • Had this issue come up within the last few weeks. I changed my blog to the post permalink structure. Unfortunately all my blog post with Tweets, Likes, Shares, G+ all zeroed out. So I changed it back. Any suggestions? Blair
