ipage blog hosting? why or why not? (7 posts)

  • I have learned on SME that I need to have my blog self-hosted. Some service  recommendations have been godaddy, hostgator and others. I found ipage and the cost is attractive to me over the others (at least I think it is cheaper.). Is anyone using ipage? Can you recommend it or not recommend it? Do you know if it will be hard to move my wordpress blog there?

  • Hey @deairby,

It should not be hard to move there. If you follow some of the advice from the previous threads where we discussed how to move a blog you will be in good shape.

iPage looks like a perfectly reasonable host and they have specified they fully support word press.I saw one site: http://webhostinggeeks.com/user-reviews/ipage/ that showed 456 reviews with a four star average… makes me a little suspicious but I did not see anything that was a real red flag.

They also buy renewable energy certificates to offset their carbon footprint wanting to be a green company. If that is the sort of thing that you like then great! Let us know how it turns out. Eventually maybe we can create a sticky thread with web hosting services (other than the big guys) for folks all over to choose from.

  • Ok I read more on the webhostinggeeks review site and found some definite negative reviews, that means that mostly people seem to like their service. You can run into troubles with ANY web host, I doubt iPage has a lock on that. But anyway if you use them let us know how it goes.

  • I knew a couple of Artist who went for a cheap hosting company once. They created the product they sold at Trade Shows and Art Festivals. The hosting company went out of business and they didn’t find out until they began to contact potential customers/clients via snail-mail. The customers/clients were the ones who informed them that they no longer had a website and they assumed the couple had gone out of business. Many of their customers/clients had already purchased from other companies because they thought they had gone out of business. They lost a lot of money and it didn’t make up for what they saved.

  • I will most likely go with go daddy, as recommended by our fearless leader, Kristi Hines @kristi-hines @dyanebradley

  • @deairby I have been happy enough with godaddy thus far.

  • thanks for your diligence! @glengorham
