Internal Links. I need a tool to make this easier (20 posts)

  • On another forum, we were discussing Bounce Rate and  @kristi-hines  pointed out the importance of internal links. So I have set to task going through my blog and trying to link it to itself using key words and phrases.

My question is that when I have lots of posts, how do I simplify this process other than just searching my site and finding things to link to. Are there any tools to help me do this? What is your technique?

  • There are plugins that will put related content at the bottom of every post, based on your keywords and topics.

You can also use an Older/Newer post plugin that will do it.

  •  Do you know of a specific plugin you would recommend? @erikdeckers

  • @jasonwiser Zemanta will do exactly what you need with just a little setup.

  • yeah @glengorham I have been working with Zemata, and it is incredibly invasive. I guess I need to figure out the settings. I does a great job of finding the posts, but it also adds all this unwanted text to the post that i cant get rid of no matter how many times i delete the html and refresh. Obviously because it is browser add on driven. But, i have just started, and will step back, take a deep breath, and try again.

  • @jasonwiser You might want to try SEO Smart Links (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/seo-automatic-links/).  It allows you to setup specific keywords and links to them.  I can’t remember if goes through old content, but it will definitely add those links automatically based on the keywords for newer content.

  • I’m thinking PushButtonSEO does this, too, Jason. The curation part is really cool and the basic seo enhancements make it fun to use. And the basic version is free, at least right now. Pay more to unlock other enhancements, etc.

I’ve been trying out so many curation tools lately, it’s hard to separate them sometimes, but I do think PBseo let’t you target a keyword to link automatically to certain sites if you set it up that way, just as Kristi said.

    @kristi-hines @jasonwiser

  • Great I’m going to give these two a shot. Thanks.  @atlantarobin @kristi-hines

  • @jasonwiser not that I am against Most Recent or other plugins, I find that the best is to use links in your articles to previous posts. You can be pretty sure to see at least one internal link in each SME post. That also helps with the bounce rate.

  • @richardmclaughlin Respectfully, that is what I am referring to in this question, not recent posts. How do you find those links easily when you have 100′s of articles? That is why I am looking for a plugin that will scan my posts library, and scan my article looking for words and blog titles that match. Not sure if this plugin exists.

  • @jasonwiser my bad, I thought you wanted something in the sidebar.

use Mr. Google “site:socialmediaexaminer.com oatmeal” searches SME for the word oatmeal (and Oatmeal was used Jul 7, 2010 & Sep 15, 2010 – whooda thunk?).Choose a keyword phrase and ask Mr. Google to find a match. If are used to doing this it only takes a moment to find a good link for any keyword. AND you get to decided if the link is right.

  • @jasonwiser we use Better Related Content by Nicolas Kuttler. Check out my own blog at http://problogservice.com/blog-3 and see one of the posts to see it in action.

  • @glengorham

I’ve been heavily using Zemanta on a pretty new site, Glen, and since I was using original video, I didn’t stop to see if it could pull and place video. But just from looking around, I didn’t notice any specific tool for that. Am I missing something or can it handle video, too?

@richardmclaughlin And thanks for the site search reminder, Richard. I was thumbing through my notes for that very thing yesterday, but your suggested use for that is just perfect for a current need and will be such a time saver. (Exactly what I was trying to remember and find yesterday, lol). Thanks.

  • @richardmclaughlin yeah, great tool. Probably the best suggestion so far.

  • You can try SEO Smart Links. It works pretty well for interlinking purpose..   And another one is Insights plugin… http://www.prelovac.com/vladimir/wordpress-plugins/insights

  • @romysingh Thanks I’m trying these out now.

  • @atlantarobin I don’t use video all that much; I should start thinking about it. So I have not investigated that. I will have to look into it.

  • @jasonwiser I have 175 articles on my blog, and I individually add related blog posts to each new post. I use the categories filter on the posts page to find the ones that I think are the best fit for each situation. But with my content, the category is only one factor that would make two posts similar enough to link together.

The challenge with my strategy is that the links are static and not dynamic. That has all sorts of side effects as I use my blog in often unconventional ways. But I’ve never found a plug-in that captures the right posts the same way that I would select them. So there I am!

  • @charlene-kingston yeah finding the right posts can take time, which is why I posted this. Glad I’m not the only one challenged by this.

  • @jasonwiser I was hoping to find a grand solution in this conversation as well. There are some things that just require human attention. At least until artificial intelligence develops to the point where we can have robotic virtual assistants. :-)
