Wondering, when you’re writing a post and looking for expert sources, where do you turn?
During this past year I discovered, Help a Reporter Out, HARO, for example as a great place to submit a query and had some great success with people who were willing to share their experiences with me.
Sometimes of course, I had to filter through the responses because people with ulterior motives may have been responding w/ their pitches but for the most part, I received great responses.
Where do you find good expert sources?

@debbie-hemley HARO is definitely my favorite, too, Debbie. However, I did get a bit overwhelmed, lol, when I couldn’t get it in digest form at first. It ran like a ticker tape Twitter feed. Too funny.
Of course, local chambers of commerce are always good for locating sources, especially when you want a middle America expert. Just pick the name of any small town, call their chamber, and they’ll give you their favorite local tycoon to talk with. Adds a great local touch to those big country stories and keeps you from wearing out your readers with only sources in your own town.
Also, I often use speaker bureau or meeting sites or trade show sites to source experts. Since you can sort these listings by meeting date, seminar subject, and speaker name, it’s a great way to find expert speakers with knowledge on your subject fast.

@debbie-hemley I still haven’t done one of those kinds of posts, but if I did, I would start by bookmarking every post (like today’s SME post – http://www.socialmediaexaminer.com/12-google-marketing-tips-from-the-pros/) where someone does an industry expert roundup. Then when you’re looking for experts who like to answer a question to be included in a post, you’ll have a list of people who like to share their opinions!

@atlantarobin Great suggestions. Funny I never would have thought of the local chambers but I’d bet those are a gold mine of great local sources. And, scanning the trade show speakers too would be a great way of finding people who are really out there on the circuit.
Yes, I too wish the format of HARO would read a little differently. It does get confusing at times.

@debbie-hemley I have gotten a bit lazy and started just bookmarking things on my Chrome browser. But I should get back to using Delicious. That’s my favorite system because of the tags.

@kristi-hines Yes, funny too. I had been very good about using Delicious for quite some time and then fell off from using it somewhere along the way. Good reminder to go back to using it. I had even made a point of sharing my delicious bookmarks in posts and for clients, etc.

@ellenpartal Forums are meant for eavesdropping and dropping in! We do work on trying to get anyone reported as a solicitor out when we can, so glad to hear that it’s working!
