How to track your Blog with Google Analytics (8 posts)

Topic tags: Google Analyticss
  • Hi all,

I recently released my blog and I would like to add the Google Analytics code to the blog in order to keep track of the visits.

Does anyone know where the Google tracking code has to be pasted?

    Thanks for your help!

  • @talkfusionassoc What platform are you using?  For example, some WordPress themes have an admin panel that will ask for your Google Analytics code (sometimes referred to as tracking code / stats).

  • Hi Kristi, thanks for your prompt reply. My blog is not hostet with a third Webhosting company. So far I’m only hosting through Wordpress free of charge.I was looking at the themes, but couldn’t find the option there.

Furthermore I was also looking to create an Autoresponders as to creat an Optin-List with AWeber, but I have no clue about that….

    Thanks again for your help!

  • @talkfusionassoc you can’t put Google Analytics on WordPress.com. You can put it just about anywhere else, just not there.
Normally, you would put your code right above the </head> in your blog’s header file.

  • Thanks for your comments. I’ve seen on other Blogs that code can be added to the Theme, but can’t find out how to do it on mine.

  • @talkfusionassoc When you are selecting a theme, you may notice that some of them have a space for Google Analytics tracking code in the control panel. That makes it easy. But even if they don’t, you can use the editor to insert the code into the theme template. Every theme is different, but most of them have a header template. Like  @erikdeckers said, you put it above the </head> code. But not when you host on Wordpress.com.

If the theme you choose doesn’t have your code in the control panel, if you have to insert it into the code yourself, remember that you will have to redo this every time you upgrade/update the theme files. The new version will automatically overwrite any customizations you have done.

  • @talkfusionassoc,

To be clear, did you set up your blog using WordPress.com, i.e. it’s not self-hosted? If that’s the case, you cannot install Google Analytics. That said, WordPress has its own built-in traffic dashboard. See here for more information:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/stats/

If you are actually using a self-hosted version of WordPress, you can just use this free plugin:

    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/google-analytics-for-wordpress/

Good luck, and let me know if you have any other questions.

    - Lukas

  • Thanks Lukas for the info.
