How to Teach People To Subscribe (11 posts)

  • My blog audience is not very computer savez. I am wondering how to engage people and teach people how to subscribe to the list RSS feed or through email.

  • @lkellandmay : Write a blog post about it. In your words to your audience, you know best how to communicate with them.
We did the same thing:  http://www.sowandso.com/pinterest-for-garden-ideas/ I have no real numbers, but it did work…
And.., for email subscriptions.., put a huge “Subscribe” button on your blog (what is it by the way?). One field for an email address and one button… keep it simple… RSS Feeds can be tricky (and nerdy), they usually require a couple of steps to set up.., for a reader.

    Hope this helps…

  • @lkellandmay As @rogiernoort suggests, make a simple post or page on your website explaining the subscription process, step by step. Then put the link near your subscription button on your website as a What’s This or even simply a ?. Also, in your instructions, show them the benefits of using an RSS reader as a whole – let them know they can subscribe to other sites similar to yours that they would be interested in, that way they can see the full benefit and will also subscribe to yours.

  • Thank you

There are several email subscribe plugins -  Will add a simple post and subscribe via email so they don’t miss a thing!

The above suggestions are good. As in all sales: You have to ask for the order!

I have found that people equate the word “subscribe” with payment. Pointing out that a subscription is free, how many posts they can expect to clutter their email, and that they have control over staying subscribed may also be helpful in encouraging followers.

  • Good Point Judith. If people know they can unsubscribe at anytime AND it is free may make a difference.

  • @lkellandmay Laura, I would offer a free report, ebook or video on your topic with an opt-in box. Make it something everyone on your list would want… something valuable that they’d normally have to pay for.

There’s plenty of PLR (private label rights) content available that you could personalize and make yours. People like FREE stuff. Say something like “Get instant access” and “100 FREE WordPress Plugins” or whatever you choose to give away. They get the freebie… you get their email to follow up with more tips and freebie advice through your newsletter.

Be the ever helpful Helen who gives great freebies!

BTW, I got my 100 FREE WordPress Plugins guide and loved it… and stay on that guy’s list because he’s AWAYS giving away great free stuff.

  • Thank you Robin. Appreciate your comments.
Giving away free stuff does keep people happy.

  • I find that the easiest solution is to use http://www.feedburner,com. As other have stated you could blog about and let your readers know the how and why they should sign up.

  • I have found that the easiest method of teaching something of this nature is a step by step method. This system gets you from point A to point B in real time with out ambiguity.

  • Have you considered making a screencast with voiceover?

If you’re on a Mac I can explain how. If on a PC, I’m not sure. People that lack tech skills, like videos. You could provide a written text too in order too allow all visitors to participate and to please Google as well.
